You can try following below steps for dealing with error code:800704C8:
Go to Start > type "cmd" without quotes in Search bar > Click on ok > When cmd appears in list > Right click on it and select Run as Administrator.
One command window gets opened type below command and hit enter:
Chkdsk /f /r
Now restart your computer and let the tool carry out it task.
When check disk process gets completed then open command prompt again, type below command and hit enter.
fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\
When you get a Prompt saying "The operation completed successfully", close Command Prompt and restart your system again.
Upon restart disable all startup items as well as third party services , restart your system again, downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and proceed with simple on screen instruction for installing or updating vista.
