| Can't Register Copy of Vista due to error
Hi, I just upgraded a pc from XP Professional to Vista Business. The upgrade went fine without a problem however when it goes to register my copy of Vista, it gets an error message that says: error 0x8007232B DNS name does not exist. What does it need? I'm on a network and so I'm not sure what it wants. Thanks Kathy |

Contact your Systems Administrator. DNS is short for Domain Name System (or Service or Server), which means your computer cannot find the Microsoft web site. You may be blocked from the internet for some reason and your local IS people are the ones to clarify what's happening. Your installation may need some parameters changed or added. Volume versions can activate against a KMS-enabled machine in your corporate environment or against Microsoft online servers using a MAK. MAKs are special keys that are installed after your Vista installation is complete. As a volume customer you should be able to get one from you MS rep. Please consult the Windows Vista Volume Activation 2.0 Technical Guidance page http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win...an/volact.mspx for more information. It includes the Windows Vista Volume Activation 2.0 Step-by-Step Guide http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win...n/volact1.mspx and the Windows Vista Volume Activation FAQ http://www.microsoft.com/technet/win.../plan/faq.mspx . This was posted in the x64 group. It's probably applicable to your situation. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: Windows Vista Activation Error 0x8007232b Date: Mon, 08 Jan 2007 17:20:27 GMT From: Darrellg@online.microsoft.com ("Darrell Gorter[MSFT]") Organization: Microsoft Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general References: <1168266121.846719.12180@s34g2000cwa.googlegroups.com> <#fciIIzMHHA.4376@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl> Hello , Telephone activation will not work. When you install Windows VIsta Volume license media, the installation uses a default generic product key. By itself, this key will look for a KMS server, querying DNS to locate the address of the server. When there is no KMS server setup in your enviroment, the error message below is given. So either a KMS server needs to be setup with the KMS product key and activated. OR the customer must change the product key to a MAK(Volume License Multiple Activation Key) key. After changing to a MAK product key, the customer will be able to use phone activation. | Re: Can't Register Copy of Vista due to error
The information from Thoe is correct however I thought I should add my own experience in case it is of any help. --I was suffering the same DNS Error-- During initial installation using volume license media, Vista does indeed use a generic Product Key. I contacted my helpdesk to ask for a valid key after installation to allow activation. After some time I was provided with a MAKey as we currently have no plans to implement our own KMServer. As a volume license customer someone in your organisation will have access to the Volume Licensing Website, from where they can get a MAKey. Choosing Control Panel, System allows you to change the product key. On changing this I was then able to proceed in activating Vista via the internet. On a side note by using either KMS (Vista phones home and activates every 180 days) or MAK (Microsoft's Servers) a running sum of installations (and therefor licenses) will be kept. So installing a Volume License on multiple PC's outwith your organisation is to be avoided. Regards, William "Theo" wrote: > This was posted in the x64 group. I recieved an error when trying to register Vista Ultimate too, but it wasn't the DNS error that everyone else is getting. I got "The system cannot find the specified file". I got the same error. I get to the webpage, click on 1 to 50 employees and then...nothing. When I double click on the "done with errors" in the bottom of the page I get the following: Line: 23 Char: 11 Error: The system cannot find the file specified Code: 0 URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...s/default.mspx I also get the warning in the bottom right corner that it is not registered but is within the grace period. Anyone else? Anyone find a fix? Thanks!
