No volume or network icons in notification area

There is some problem on my Vista system with the notification area. Suddenly my volume network and power icons disappeared. I have tried using the registry editor and even a microsoft fix-it program but the icons tick boxes remain greyed out and they do not appear in "HIDE INACTIVE ICONS" either. any ideas?

i solved it by doing something awesome. a virus had removed a hexadecimal vaule from one file in the registry. 4 weeks of searching through the registry and i found it, fixed it with a new value. Ka-Boss. anyone else havinig this problem you'll find it might be a virus, so if the common fixes don't work all is not lost.
