Re: Live messenger stopped working after SP2 install

Hmm
that is strange. I have Vista x64 SP2, and my Live Messenger runs just
fine.
You issue may be due to Windows Corruption/Drive errors.

run a sfc /scannow check for Windows integrity violations, and do a
disk check.
note- to run the system file integrity check , see step one, but copy
and paste
this instead of defrag c: -w

*sfc /scannow*

Re: Live messenger stopped working after SP2 install

Had the same trouble - didn't uninstall messenger, just updated to the
latest version of live messenger to fix, as per: 'This Post'
Everything fine now.
Just posting as a heads-up to anyone else who has this problem.

Re: Live messenger stopped working after SP2 install

Hmm not the only thing that`s strange I started defrag C: -w and now it has
been running for 24 hours, and still running.
I do not dare try to stop or restart the PC since I am afraid I will screw
up my C: drive.
Any suggestions?

24 hours is too long. Close the elevated cmd window, and restart PC. It
will not screw it up, just abort the scan.

Re: Live messenger stopped working after SP2 install

The defrag took 26 hours after which I ran a chkdsk C: with no errors

But it is still impossible to reinstall Messenger. I still get the message
"Couldn't install programs. Please try to install Windows live programs later
later".

Error: OnCatalogResult: 0x80072ee6
Next steps: An unknown error has occurred"

Annoying since the error message doesn't help at all

Sounds like you might have a problem with the hard drive. You might as well
stop it.

OK, try this...

Delete C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Run SFC /SCANNOW

If it comes up with components it could not fix...

Copy CBS.log and open CBS - Copy.log

Go and look for "Beginning Verify and Repair" and copy/paste from there to
the end of the file.

Then post it here and we can see what's going on.
