| How can I restore registry from Repair CD? In order to prepare myself for the worst, I need to know how to restore my registry for the case where Vista does not boot and I have no system restore points. However, before the failure happened I exported the full registry as a reg file. I've read that the boot CD can do a lot of repairs but I can't find a tutorial explaining how to restore the registry. -- mel2000 |

Sorry but I know of no way to do what you want to do. I'm not sure it would be of much help anyway - there are a a number of reasons Vista won't boot and Registry corruption would be way down my list. -- Richard G. | Re: How can I restore registry from Repair CD? Thanks for your reply. However, that article describes how to replace the corrupted registry with that of the registry created during the original setup installation, not the one I saved just prior to the system crash. -- mel2000 |

| Re: How can I restore registry from Repair CD?
Hello, Did you save the registry hives or did you export them? If you exported them, they need to be imported into the registry rather than just a file replacement scenario. You could boot to WinRE and copy back the automatic backed copies however. By default Windows Vista maintains two copies of the registry however in the c:\windows\system32\config\ c:\windows\system32\config\regback folder. System is a newer backup than system.old in that folder for example. about 12 hours apart, usually only a day old or so. You can copy those over to the c:\windows\system32\config folder. Backup the bad copies first just to be safe. Replace SAM, Security, Software,Components, and System as one unit, Do not just replace one hive. If they do not work then try replacing them with sam.old, security.old.software.old, components.old, and system.old Thanks, Darrell Gorter[MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights -------------------- | >From: mel2000 <guest@unknown-email.com> | >Subject: Re: How can I restore registry from Repair CD? | >Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 00:47:54 -0500 | >Message-ID: <bed9853c389d7b8923501966f49540f7@nntp-gateway.com> | >Organization: Forums | >User-Agent: vBulletin USENET gateway | >X-Newsreader: vBulletin USENET gateway | >X-Originating-IP: 98.206.116.49 | >References: <00ccddc44ea018635a0738d8582ae711@nntp-gateway.com> <uVkEmbfHJHA.4080@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl> | >Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup | >NNTP-Posting-Host: vistax64.com 74.86.192.138 | >Lines: 1 | >Path: TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl!TK2MSFTNGP01.phx.gbl!TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl | >Xref: TK2MSFTNGHUB02.phx.gbl microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup:45376 | >X-Tomcat-NG: microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup | > | > Thanks for your reply. | Re: How can I restore registry from Repair CD?
Hello, If you use the boot cd, you are loading the registry from the boot cd. If you import when booted from the boot cd, you are importing the registry into the registry loaded from the boot cd, not the registry from the hard drive. | Re: How can I restore registry from Repair CD? Thanks for the clarification alert. Sorry, that I didn't make myself clear. I meant to import the registry stored on my external drive, into the regedit app on the C: drive, which was launched by the CD. If that's possible, that's what I meant. -- mel2000 |
