| Need help installing to a GPT partition hello all, So, here is my issue. I am currently trying to install Vista Ultimate X64 SP1 and and I have used diskpart to create a gpt partition. The drive partition is seen by the windows installer but when I try to install I get an error saying that windows can not install to the selected drive because it is a gpt type. I have done all the searching I could and can not find any solution to my problem. UEFI is enabled in my bios as is required and the drive seems to be setup properly. My hard disk controller is a Intel Matrix ICH9R in SATA mode with no arrays. Any help would be greatly appreciated. -- Llew |

You do not provide much information. For instance - Did you start with a dynamic or basic disk - was command line Diskpart used and did Diskpart create the three partitions necessary e.g. ESP, MBR and MSR? | Re: Need help installing to a GPT partition Thank you for the post AJR. No I had not read that document, though I did try to hunt around microsofts site to no avail. I will read that now and see if it fixes my problems. As for the other questions. It was a basic disk and I used diskpart to create the required partitions. -- Llew |

Note from his post "... UEFI is enabled in my bios...." - GPT can be used as a data disk on a BIOS computer - second thought here - he does not specify the processor! | Re: Need help installing to a GPT partition Ok so here is the update on my situation. I read through the document that AJR linked ( thanks again) and using it managed to get to the vista installer. Now, I have a new problem. Vista is letting me install on the GPT partition, but now I am getting the following error after Vista extracts all the files. "Windows couldn't update the computers boot configuration. Installation can not continue." for those of you that want to know, my motherboard is the Intel DP35DP and the cpu is a Q9300. Installed ram is 1 stick of 2gb DDR2 800 Corsair. -- Llew |

| Re: Need help installing to a GPT partition
A few comments - Windows can only boot from EFI sysems - Boot manager and required files are installed on the EFI system partition (ESP). Check via the Disk managment (MMC) snap-in or Diskpart to verify the existence of the partition. This all assumes the disk is a basic and not dynamic disk. | Re: Need help installing to a GPT partition Yes the EFI partition is there and has the EFI data on it. Also, you are correct, this is a basic disk and not dunamic. Any other ideas... im stumped. I am about to try reinstalling on a MBR disk to narrow down my problem. Will post here with results. -- Llew |
