IDT - Audio - IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

After installing this optional Windows VISTA update, I get the error that "No
Audio Output Device is Installed". What happened and how do I fix it?

Same thing happened to my on my Gateway laptop. I went back to the SigmaTel
audio drivers and all is good again. Frankly, I don't know why I was
upgrading if the first place because my audio was fine.

The IDT audio update is due to an issue with Vista SP1. Many installs
have an older version of one of the driver files that is not compatible.
Unforunately, the one offered by Microsoft is screwing up many
computers.

If you have a recent Dell desktop, you can try R173209.exe from Dell:
http://support.euro.dell.com/support...download.aspx?
c=ie&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R173209&formatcnt=1&libid=0&fileid=235508

Shorter link: http://tinyurl.com/5rpuk5

The web page says it's for an Optilex 740, but internally it says this:
Title : Audio:SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio Driver
Version : A05
OEM Name : SIGMATEL
OEM Ver : 6.10.0.5515

OptiPlex - 210L, 740;
Precision - 380, 390, 490, 690;
XPS - 420, DXG061, XPS 720, XPS710
Oses : Windows Vista 32-bit Business, Windows Vista 32-bit Home
Basic, Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium, Windows Vista 32-bit Ultimate,

Languages : Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese-S, Chinese-T, English,
French, German, Japanese, Korean, Spanish
Created : Tue Nov 27 16:41:39 CST 2007

In addition, it works find on my XPS410, which is similar to the
Dimension 9200.

After updating my audio, I was able to download and install SP1 through
Windows Update. My only scare is that after the SP1 update, Windows
defaulted to a USB headset instead of my speakers. I had to go into the
Sound settings and change the default back.

I am having this same problem with my gateway after downloading the Vista update. I cant see to fix the problem. I have uninstalled the vista update. My computer installed the software for Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC and said it was "ready to use" but i am still getting the No Audio Output Device installed, and my sound isnt working.... does anyone know how to fix it? I would really really appreciate the help.

You can't just roll back the driver - you need to go back previous restore
point.

Yes, that's what I did too. I misstated above.

This optional update was also offered to me last week. Knowing my
audio is not "IDT", I simply right-clicked on it and put a check-mark
beside "Hide".

In fact, I feel confident that if I were to unhide this update, it
would again be offered to me.

My question to those in the Cloud is:

"Why is Microsoft offering this optional update to so many who do not
need it, or want it?"

I also ask any official Microsoft representative to respond, if he
reads this post.

Of course, I flatter myself to even consider that Microsoft would
reply in a Usenet newsgroup to such a person as myself.

In 2006, IDT took over the audio codec chip production from SigmaTel,
which is usually identified as STAC.

That may be so, but my Dell (bought last month) refers to the Audio
chip as "STAC98xx". Additionally, there are no entries for "IDT"
anywhere in my Registry. Nor are there any such entries on the Dell
driver installation disk. Nor is such a codec driver offered on
Dell's Driver Support site for my particular machine.

IN fact, I've never seen such drivers offered by Microsoft Update on
ANY Dell I've owned, until it was offered after I installed Service
Pack 1.

How this got offered on Windows Update for my particular audio codec,
I will never know. All I do know is that this update is causing many
others lots of problems.

This is not the first time Windows Update has offered me a "poisonous"
unneeded update before. For years, Windows would offer me an HP CD
driver (of course, I had no such HP CD/DVD drives). The ONLY time I
installed the bugger, I wound up having to reinstall the OS.

I assure you, I began looking carefully at such driver updates on
Windows Update, and have not repeated my mistake since then. I prefer
getting my drivers from my PC manufacturer, anyway. Never had good
luck with the drivers offered on Microsoft Update.

Windows Update was looking for a file named STWRT.SYS. It then looks at
the version of that file. If it was 6.10.0.5511 or older, it offered the
update. Unfortunately, it appears it may also have updated other files
that caused compatibility problems. Since this is usually built into a
motherboard, there could be minor differences on some.

Strange: Version Tracker Pro shows no such update for my machine. In
fact, all it shows for Audio is the "SigmaTel High Definition Audio
Codec." Nor does it show any updates available.

My opinion?
STAY AWAY from any such "IDT" updates unless you are SURE they are for
your machine.

And, "If it works already fairly-well, there is no need to update". As
they say, "No need to fix what's not broken."
