mp3 files won't play - error says NPPTools.dll missing

Whenever I try to launch an mp3 file (by double clicking on it) i get an
error stating "application has failed to start because NPPTools.dll can not
be found".
When I click OK, an unknown mp4 player opens but it can't see/open the mp3
files.

I've located a download of the NPPTools.dll ZIP-file but when I try to
extract it I do not have access to allow installation into the Windows/System
directory where the instructions say to extract it.

1) If NPPTools.dll will fix my problem i need exact, step by step
instructions of what to do and how to grant permissions that allow me to
extract it into the proper Windows directory

2) If the missing NPPTools.dll is not the issue, what do I do?

Read this and see if it helps...read it ALL... from top to bottom.

'Download details: Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1'

Re: mp3 files won't play - error says NPPTools.dll missing

The Network Monitor file sounds rather risky to install and i don't see how
this solves a MP3 player problem. I ran an advanced search on my hard drive
for Netmon2, NM3 and NM2 with no results. Interestingly a search for
npptools.dll does indicate it exists in both the C:\Drivers (top level) and
C:\Drivers\video\R163620\B_50934 directories.

If npptools.dll is no longer used in VISTA and I did not install it
manually, then why is it present? But more importantly, how do i get my MP3
files to be recognized by the VISTA Media Player?

Why not use Vista's Default Programs tool to reassociate Mp3 files to
Windows Media Player? That sounds like the keenest idea so far. =)

Exactly the fix I was going to suggest. I will bet that your MP3 songs
got associated with another program. I did a seach on my Vista and see
no NPPTools.dll.
Right click on the MP3 and select "open with" and direct it to WMP, or
player of your choice and check the box that says "always use the
selected program to open files of this type".
