    Hardware acceleration

When I try to use some programs I receive a message saying my hardware
acceleration is turned off. How do I turn this feature on.

    RE: Hardware acceleration

I think you'll have to provide more information to get help. Are we talking
about hardware acceleration of video? (That's common.)
What programs cause this message to show up?

    RE: Hardware acceleration

I get the same message whenever I open Nero applications. It tells me to use
the directx diagnostic tool but when i search my computer for it no such file
is found. I also downloaded and installed the latest version of directx to no
avail. Another problem I'm having is no sound on the disc when I burn a dvd.
If I tell nero to write the dvd-video file to the hard drive it has sound but
if I try to burn the same file on a disc it will have picture but no audio. I
also updated the driver for my sound card and now I cant even access the
sound manager for my card to try enabling other recording devices on the card
to see if they might work. The last one I tried was the stereo mix. Seriously
thinking about reinstalling XP sp3 , Vista just doesnt seem worth the money
    or hassle.

    Re: Hardware acceleration

Vista requires a graphics card that has on board DX9 support since it has
the DX9 software component for use with internally and uses it for Aero and
other graphic applications. The built into Vista DX diagnostic will only
tell you if you have software support which is of no use without the
    graphics card support.
What make/model graphics card do you have?

    Re: Hardware acceleration

I have that part figured out now. My card doesnt have the minimum 64 MB of
onboard memory or directx on the card.(ATI Rage 128 Pro), thats no problem to
fix. I am seriously in need of help with lack of sound on discs when I burn.
I have updated the driver and tried burning with different devices on the
card but have had no luck. If u could tell me which device needs to be
enabled that would be a big help. So far I have tried with the stereo mix,
and the cd player sound device. Neither have worked. Also, why cant I just
enable all the devices at once?

    Re: Hardware acceleration

I think that when you have replaced your graphics card with a current
generation card from Nvidia or ATI that has at least 128MB of onboard memory
that your other problems will go away since the built into Vista decoder
will have a graphics card that it can use and then its audio decoder will
    also be used.

    Re: Hardware acceleration

You are correct, partly. I am using the onboard sound card, which has only 3
jacks in the back. Mic, output, and line-in. Line-in had to be set as my
default recording device in order to get sound on the recording side, period.
Then, I had to check the 'let applications take full control over these
devices' box. I now have sound when I burn, however I must go into the
properties of each video item, while in Nero, to raise the volume level
before I burn. If I dont the video comes out with very low volume level. This
is the part I think will be solved by a better graphics card. Thanks alot!
