system tray notification icons missing and disable

Hi All,
I've go this problem on my Vista Home Edition.
The 3 notification icons - Power, Network, Volume - disappeared. Also, when
right-clicking the notification area, the 'Customize Notification Icons'
option is grayed out. On the 'Notification Area' tab of Taskbar Properties,
for the selected System Icons, Clock was fine, but the other 3 were not
checked, and grayed out.

Obviously, my first instinct was to reboot, and that
has helped to an extent, as the Power option in Taskbar Properties is no
longer grayed out, and I can select it and it displays. But Volume and
Network are still unavailable.

Presuming that the selections made there are stored in the registry, I ran
Process Monitor while changing and applying the selection of the Power icon,
but that doesn't show up any relevent (or changed) RegSetValue entries.

So now, I'm at a loss, and I look to you to tell me where these settings are
stored, so I can get the Volume and Network icons back, an re-enable the
'Customize Notification Icons' option.

I've tried system restore but was of no help.
This problem comes randomly, at times i get all the system icons and at time
i lost all/some.

Pls help.

Interesting. You seem to have lost "Permissions" in your Registry. I would
run regedit from Safe Mode (F8 on restart). If all else fails, you can reset
Security to defaults.

HOW TO Reset Security Settings Back to the Defaults:

I'm having the same problem ever since yesterday's automatic Windows Update
on my Windows XP.

I often have the same problem, and this fixes it right away:

'System icons may not appear in the notification area on a Windows
Vista-based computer until you restart the computer'

Notification area icons missing in Vista | The Winhelponline.com Blog:
http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/no...sing-in-vista/

This should restore the Clock, Network icon, Power and the Volume Control icons to the notification area.

Log out and log back in, that's all you have to do.

Customise Notification Area

Here's a similar one. Several strange things have happend in my Vista Home Premium. Old icons have appeared in the notification area, and when I try to remove them there are NO icons listed in the "Customise Notification Area". I thought setting up a new user would be the answer, but when I try to do this, I can't. Help!
