Vista does not do this by default so you have to work around it.
Create a script to run containing the command:
netsh wlan connect name=WirelessProfileName ssid=AdhocSSID interface="Wireless Network Connection Name"
replace the three items in italics with your details
and set it to run at start up by putting it in the startup folder under start up:
    C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
