error code 800700C1

Its been just 3 months i am using this Windows Vista laptop. Since past 1 week while running Windows Update i use to get an error message every time saying "Error Code 800700c1". Somebody suggested me that it could be due to some corrupt file and can be fixed by taking the ownership of the corrupt file.

I did the same, restarted computer and check for updates but still the same error code.Now i dont have any idea what could be the problem and how can i get rid of this error. Somebody please help.

Just go through these few steps and see if it makes ant change. Open a command prompt, WinKey+R. Type net stop wuauserv, press Enter. Now simply copy the following command and paste it:

rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir

Press Enter. Now copy and paste:

net start wuauserv.

Now run Windows Updates and try to install. Hopefully you will not get any error now.

I know this is from years ago, but I'm having the same issue, and I tried your method, but the command prompt "rmdir /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\wuredir" doesn't work. I get error window saying "Windows cannot find rmdir". Any further advice?
