chkdsk /f does not run at boot

I tried both Methods One & Two as suggest in the article posted at
    'http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-checkdisk.html'
    (mhtml:{F5BFF8D4-4CCA-4015-A0CE-9CFCC292CB43}mid://00000013/!x-usc:http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67612-checkdisk.html)
and still can't get chkdsk /f to start when I boot. I have determined
that the corrupt files are in the Microsoft Games folder. When I open
the Games from the Start Menu, the folder is empty. I tried to delete
this folder from Program Files and got the message, "An unexpected error
is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might
be useful if you get additional help to resolve this problem. Error
0x80070091: The directory is not empty." I copied the Microsoft Games
folder from another computer running the same OS as mine, Vista Home
Premium, and tried to replace the corrupt one on my computer and got the
same message as just stated. When I click on the folder Microsoft Games
in Program Files, I get the message, "Location is not
available. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games is not accessible, the file
or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

When I first discovered that the Games folder was empty, I tried to do
a System Restore to a day I knew that I could access the games. This is
when I discovered that I was unable to do a System Restore until the
corrupted files were repaired. Any additional suggestions would be
    appreciated.

RE: chkdsk /f does not run at boot

    Hello,
First check if autochk.exe exists in the c:\windows\system32 folder.
On the reboot, we run autochk, so if it's missing for any reason that could
    cause what you are seeing.
Second, we need to check the registry entry.
When you run chkdsk /f on your system volume the information is stored in
the registry so that it starts during the boot process.
So if the registry entry is corrupted or the permissions are not correct,
    it may not start.

    Reference this article:
831426 Chkdsk.exe or Autochk.exe starts when you try to shut down or
    restart your computer
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;831426

We need to Check the Session Manager registry entry

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
    Manager\BootExecute
    What is on this entry?

After you run chkdsk /f does the entry change?
It should have autocheck autochk * on it.

    Thanks,
    Darrell Gorter[MSFT]

I tried Method 3, and that didn't work. I also tried chkdsk C: /f and
chkntfs /c C: with no avail. When I tried sfc /scannow, the scan began
and got to the point: Verification 66% complete. Windows Resorces
Protection could not perform the requested operation. I also tried
chkdsk /i. The scan began the verification. During the verification
117,504 file records were processed, 6 segments were indicated to be
corrupt. 93 large files were processed. It then stated: Errors found.
CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode. I hope I can find a solution
to this problem. My computer performs all other functions correctly. I
am concerned that if a problem comes up where it becomes mandatory to do
a system Restore, that I wouldn't be able to do it until this problem is
corrected. I am willing to try all options to prevent a reformat.

Try installing Windows (repair ? - I run french version) console.
Then you can boot from the console and launch chkdsk with /p
    switch.

I hope someone can provide the right wording in english.

Nobody on this board seems to know how to fix this specific error. 0x80070091
I have the exact same problem.... posted here and other places to no avail.
If you do find a solution please post it!!

I have tried all the suggestions suggested in this forum to no avail.
In reply to the suggestions to try to run chkdsk in Safe Mode - that
brought up another problem. I wasn't able to get the computer to boot
in Safe Mode. It started to boot, but would not complete the process.
The computer froze during boot. The only way I could get back to normal
mode was to turn off the computer. I don't seem to have a problem with
any of the programs, the browser, or e-mail. The only problem that got
me to be aware of my problem was when I noticed that the Games Folder
was empty. When I tried to do a System Restore brought light to this
existing problem. It looks like the only recourse I have now, unless
someone can come up with some other solution, is to do a reformat -
something I would like to avoid doing.

Reformatting will wipe out your OS. You'll need a Windows installation CD to
get it back. Do you have it?

In any event, I would try System Recovery first.

    Hello,
What is on the registry before and after you run chkdsk?
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
    Manager\BootExecute
    Check the value.
Then open an elevated cmd prompt and run chkdsk /f
    Recheck the registry value.
Report back what the values are prior to and after running chkdsk /f.
    Thanks,

Thanks to everyone that offered suggestions. I tried to run chkdsk in
Safe Mode as was suggested. Once I got in Safe Mode, I could not get
the computer to boot in normal mode. I called tech support for my
computer and was told that I had to reimage my computer. I have
completed that operation and am now in the process of reinstalling all
my programs - what a headache. Thanks again.

Re: chkdsk /f does not run at boot

I've seen quite a lot of reports of this problem, but no satisfactory
solution. I'm glad MSFT people seem to be reading this thread, as it
seems like something that may need to be addressed by MSFT directly.

My problem started with me trying to back up my complete computer,
being told there was a problem with the disk, being told I needed to
check the disk, accepting the suggestion to check disk, being told I
needed to schedule a backup and reboot, which I did. The computer did
not reboot correctly after this, and I needed to run a repair process
using the installation DVD. The reported root cause was disk error.

I followed Darrell Gorter's directions, and can report the following:
Initially there were two lines in the BootExecute value (I don't
    know why):
    autocheck autochk /p \??\C:
    autocheck autochk *
In this state, reebooting did not trigger a disk check
I removed the first line and rebooted. No check.
I removed both lines and rebooted. No check (as expected).
I ran chkdsk /f, after which the following line appeared
    autocheck autochk /p \??\C:
    I rebooted, but nothing happened.

    chkdsk is present.
autochk is present, but running it reports "Program to big to fit in
memory". I guess that is normal?

This is where I am at. Any suggestions for what next? I'm willing to
do more debugging if a MSFT person is interested to hear about it.

No this is not normal, that error message usually indicates that the file
    is corrupted.
Just to check while in Windows I ran autochk. Autochk is supposed to run a
boot time, before the OS locks any files so
I didn't expect it to run but I expected a error message and I got the one
    I expected.
"The C:\Windows\system32\autochk.exe application cannot be run in Win32
    mode."
I would suggest running sfc /scannow on your system and report back any
    errors.
It logs to the cbs.log file.
The log file is pretty noisy so run this command against it
    findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt

    From this article
928228 How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows
Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program generates in Windows Vista
    http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;928228

we are looking to see if sfc reports an issue with autochk
