Sleep Mode - Network Connections

running vista ultimate 32-bit (systems config below)... is there any way to
keep vista from thrashing my internet connection when i put it in sleep mode
? NIC adapters are set NOT to turn off under power management... it doesn't
seem to matter... i have to repair the connection every time when the thing
wakes up. Vista recognizes my router as a network device (not in device
manager) but there are no power settings there and the router's never turned
off. anyone got any ideas ?

"Allow the computer to turn this device to save power."

I never lose Internet or Lan for this matter.

What kind of router is it? If it is a Linksys or similar like Netgear
perhaps you should check with the maker. They are cheep devices.

Vista is not responsible for your router.

What this seems to indicate is that the power settings for the NIC are
irrelevant... Either that or the drivers for my NIC (nvidia) suck... do you
actually use "sleep mode" ? I don't think it has anything to do with the
router...

It is hard to understand what you are trying to ask. If your question is:
"Do I use sleep mode?" YES, I do.

If you don't think the router is responsible, good for your router.

I don't think I can be of any more help to a person who believes that Vista
is responsible for everything including his leaky roof.

no answer. can only reply that I have the same problem. Ever since I
changed the motherboard my Vista PC has had problems with restarting
from sleep mode. Also, after the install of the new M/B the PC takes
60 seconds to connect to the internet. Prior to the new M/B the
initial connect to the network was much faster.

Hi Timb,

You might check in the BIOS for a "Wake on LAN" or "Wake on Ring"
setting to make sure that they are enabled.

Thanks Brink... the tutorial was very insightful but no "joy" in fixing the
problem... my BIOS is set to support S1 and S3 ACPI but there's no "wake on
lan" except for advanced settings in the device driver itself... which are
set to "enabled"... In toying with this I've gotten some pretty spectacular
results... like a BSOD BUG_CODE_USB_DRIVER (0FE) and the whole ACPI being
lost in device manager on return from "sleep"... It also failed to recognize
my battery UPS system on resume... I'm presuming at this point that it's
another one of the many Vista shortcomings... maybe SP1 will fix it... In
the meantime, any other thoughts would be helpful...

ps. i to am haveing this vista/bios issue.

it is a vista/bios issue there is a patch from vista sp1 that was supposed to have fixed fix it.

some people were able to fix by downgradeing there bios (asus brand is the area is was reading about the people with the problem and there fix) but since i do not have a asus mb. i have not tried biod downgrade yet.

others said uninstalling nic card and reinstalling nic card seems to have fixed it for them...

seems alot of people with this issue have nvidia built in nvidia cards/ so it could be a driver issue.

and also some said unpluging power @ power supply, pushing in power and reset buttons for a few seconds. then power back up fixed it for them.

but it all steems from after a s3 state nic card has to be reset for network access.

im still trying to fix mine. none of the above has fixed it yet.

ps. I got a dfi motherboard with nvidia nic card

in my bios in power management section.

I had a option.

MAC resume from s4/s5
and it was set to disable.

I enabled it.

as for sleep issue.

I got a DFI LANPARTY SLI-DI motherboard with amd processor. 4 GB of RAM and a NVIDIA 8600GTS video.
onboard nic cards: marvell yukon and nvidia.

upon reading the latest marvell yukon nic drivers have issues with 4 GB of ram systems, and who knows what else?

Bios settigs: marvell yukon (enabled) ps. this changes at the end.
WOL = disabled. wake on lan, feature that turns system back on
WOR = disabled. wake on ring, same as above for phone modem
mac resume from S4/S5 (enabled, restores mac address, fixes lost nic card connection on sleep)

useing nvidia onboard nic.
download nforce drivers from nvidia site. save to a folder. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
download latest marvell yukon driver. save to a folder. http://www.marvell.com/drivers/search.do

uninstalled both nvidia ethernet drivers (not sure if this was necessaery or not.) and marvell yukon miniport driver (believe marvell yukon drivers was the source of sleep issue's, keep reading.)

I used the add remove programs option found in control panel.

installed nvidia nforce ethernet and bus drivers only (when it asks about installing files over other files, I replied yes to all because I was sure I had the right drivers for my motherboard from NVIDIA website.)

then I installed the latest marvell yukon driver.

rebooted.

marvell yukon still does not work do to the over 4 GB issue but was installed throughly in my registry.(ps. this issue has to do with vista machines, maybe others not sure)

now remove marvell yukon miniport driver again. useing add remove programs section found in control panel.

reboot. get into the bios on reboot.

disable marvell yukon nic card. and save settings.

reboot

now my vista64 system sleeps good.

reason why I do not blame vista.

because, I also have a xp32 hard drive on this same system.

and sleep was working good. until I played with the marvell yukon drivers.
then it also quit going to sleep.

conclusion current marvel yukon driver issues are causeing system sleep issues. (maybe they will fix in future)

But, he immediately went on to (wrongly) imply that your router was probably the problem, and that you were inappropriately blaming Vista for 'everything under the sun (or rain).' And, in that sense, I think alexB was being a bit of a (dismissive) jerk.

In fact, it is an OS 'problem,' in that you have to tell the OS exactly what you do and don't want it to do.
