does vista home premium include microsoft works

I hav e searched every place on my notebook I can think of to find works or
excel or office. I have wordpad, but was under the impression that works was
included on vista home premium (that's what my publishing company told me).
If it's there I can't find it. Is this something we have to purchase
    separately?

    ==================================
Neither Works nor Office is included with Vista.
When a computer has pre-installed software it
is an OEM package that was installed by the
    computer manufacturer.

Maybe the following freebie would be worth a try:

    OpenOffice

MS Works came with this HP laptop that had Vista pre installed.

You will not find Office or Excel...call HP about your "expectations".
You gotta be careful with these idiot salesmen....they think if you can
    type...you got "Office".
    Yesterday...they were selling coffee

NO, WORKS IS A SEPARATE PROGRAM
Some manufacturer's include it because it is cheaper than MS Office.
But you can get a free program that does as much at www.openoffice.org

Certainly possible...but that would be part of an
OEM software package installed by the computer
manufacturer...it is not included with Windows Vista.

I think the topic was about MS Works, not Office 2007. I am going to buy
Office 2007 for some work I need to do, as my hand is forced to do so.

HP is the party that provided Works along with their software bundle, not
Microsoft. It's been included with every HP PC I've bought (since
1999-2000). FWIW HP also typically provides a Works software installation
    disc as well.

OpenOffice is a good alternative suite but like almost every other WP
program is not capable of opening your existing Works documents. They'd have
to be converted to RTF or Word format first.

Have you tried OpenOffice.org? It is quite compatible with MS Office -
will import and export MS Office files and works pretty much the same way
    - it's open source and free to use.

Neither Windows Vista, nor any other version of Windows, has ever
included Works, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or any other
significant application software. Such programs have to be bought,
either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows, came
with Excel, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled it as part
of the package he sold you, not because that version of Windows came
with it. Some, but not all, vendors do the same with Windows XP.

    If you want it, yes.

Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any of its
individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Outlook, etc.), nor Microsoft Works, have _ever_ been "part" of *any*
Windows operating system. They are, and always have been, separate
applications, that must be purchased and installed separately.

Microsoft Office or Works comes pre-installed on new computers only
when the computer manufacturer chooses to offer it, and the purchaser is
willing to pay extra for it.
