    Disk Activity & Hard Faults

At about 2AM every morning I get strange behavior out of my Vista 64
system. Hard drive activity (system drive is 2 X 36GB Raptors RAID 0
config) goes through the roof, in conjunction with Memory Hard Faults.
This is being read through the Performance and Reliability Monitor.

Normally, the computer has 0 - 2 percent CPU usage, about 4 KB/sec hard
drive activity, and 0 memory hard faults/sec. Then, around 2 AM, hard
disk activity goes to 40 - over 100 KB/sec and I get up to 60 hard
faults/sec (I understand this is not actually an error). CPU usage
increases, but not significantly (AMD AM2 5200). The system even tries
to access the A:\(Floppy) drive with nothing in it (a noisy operation).
This is usually 30 min or so into the "operation" (whatever that turns
    out to be).

Alot of the processes are "svchost (service)", but there are also things
like games (that are not in use), Open Office, etc - pretty much
everything on the computer is being accessed by something. I get nothing
listed in Event Viewer and can find no explanation in Task Manager.

Is this a function of the Indexing Service, or do I have a problem I
haven't been able to identify. The computer runs fine otherwise- the
performance is very good. For what its worth, the Windows Experience
Index scores 5.9 in all fields except CPU, which is a 5.1. I don't show
any problem devices or hardware conflicts.

    Any help would be appreciated-

In Vista, Automatic Defrag, by default, comes into play at 2.00am.

Windows Defender has a automatic schedule configured to 2 am, if think. Try
and check the options to turn it off or change it.

Thanks- it was Defender. I had already stopped scheduled Windows Defrag
(in favor of Perfect Disk). I appreciate the help.

The HDD activity shown probably does not isolate streams of data being
    written to/read from the disk.
