    Unknown Publisher using Vista

I need help with adding Netscape and other programs I've downloaded from the
net. Everytime I try to load one of them, Vista blocks it. MS won't provide
support because I got the laptop from Dell and they (Dell) don't have a clue.
in fact they wanted me to load a program to allown them in my laptop and it
wouldn't even install... getting the same fairlure notice.

Sounds like maybe you don't have Admin privledges? Right-click on the
install program and select Run As Administrator and see if that helps...

Didn't help... but I get a different response. The error now states "A
problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the
program and notify you if a solution is available."

By any chance do you have another suggestion?

No, no other ideas, other than try downloading them again. I recently
downloaded and installed FireFox with no problems...maybe you got a bad
    download.

Thanks anyway. I get the same failure with Firefox and Mozilla. A program
from Dell gots down in flames to with the same response. The thing that
kills me is, I'm sure there's a thread or toggle in Vista that just rejects
based on the publisher, but I can't find the area to remove it. I'm
convinced of this since it's the same failure for all programs from the
internet. I don't have this issue adding anything from a CD.

    Frustrating!!!

    Frustrated,
This may help; with IE7 open, click on Tools, Internet Options, Advanced and
scroll down to Security, uncheck Check for signatures on downloaded
    programs.

MS didn't but Dell did. I guess this is becoming a known issue... where a
software program screws up Vista and it (Vista) won't allow installation of
any other program downloaded from the net. We tried multiple ones and I
received the same error response - Unknown Publisher.

The tech suggested I reload Vista... in which I am just finishing up now...
what a pain. I'm not sure I'll try to download anything else unless it
states it is compatible with Vista. Meaning... I'm stuck with IE for the
short term. errrrggghhhhh!!!! Or make Dell send me XP.

Well it is only getting worst!!! After reloading Vista, the first
"downloaded" software I tried to install was MSN's Instant Messenger or as
they call it Windows Live Messenger. Sure enough, it fails the exact same
way... Windows has found a problem with this file. Name:
    Install_Messenger.exe Publisher: Unknown Publisher.

Guess I'll be sending my Dell laptop back with Vista and using the money to
    buy an Apple!!!!

That would be a mistake. Dell just announced that they will be installing
Ubuntu on some of the computers they sell. Wait and purchase one of those.
You'll like it and then have access to over 20.000 free software packages.

Oh Doris, Dell has made a cascade of mistakes just like you have.
Dell may be doomed. Remember that time you did that promo for free...and
well "free" turned out to be quite expensive! As I recall you said
then..."nothing is free", or "if its so darn good why is it
    free"...something to that effect.
Best to leave the technical stuff to the pros remember?
    Good advice.
