Hi Did he create a password reset disk? Is there another user account of equal or higher privilege on the machine? Has he/she tried the admin account in Safe mode? -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Symp EL" <no.spam@for.me> wrote in message news:46258101-2B60-43E7-A4AC-5A9093FD1253@microsoft.com... >A friend lost his password to his Vista user account. No password reset disk. No other user account. He tried safe mode but it takes him to his normal log on screen for the user account that he needs the password for. Is he missing something in safe mode? This is why the fact that Vista's built-in Administrator account is normally disabled can bite you. There are good security reasons to disable it, but it causes problems in just this sort of situation. On all my clients' machines I make at least one or two extra user accounts with administrative privileges, leaving the client's daily account as a Standard user. Of course this is after the fact in your friend's case. I'm guessing that your friend was running not as Standard user but gave his account administrative privileges. When this is over, suggest that he change to a Standard user and create some extra administrative accounts. Now to the business of getting in. I've had success in booting Vista and changing passwords with NTpasswd. Give it a try. http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |
