Lost program from "all programs" start list

Having just got Vista and having installed Office, I stupidly thought that I
could put a shortcut on the desktop by dragging Office from the list onto the
desktop. It removed the entry from the "all programs" list and put the entry
on the desktop and now I can't get it back. I'm sure there is a simple
solution. What is it, please?

Are you sure?

That All Programs menu takes some getting used to. You probably are looking
at the top of the menu, which lists individual programs. Further down you
should see the list of Folders which contain multiple applications - such as
Accessories and Microsoft Office. Click here to expand the listing into
Excel, Word, etc.

As you said, a simple solution. ;<)

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Copy and paste that line into explorer.

Create a shortcut and drop it there.

Or drag the desktop icon into that folder in explorer. If you
want it on the desk, right click it, and create a shortcut before you do.

No, it has gone altogether. Actually, it remains in the top list but as far
as I understand that is only recently used programs and may yet disappear. It
is not possible to drag it back from the desktop, nor can I cut and paste it
because there is no facility to paste into the "all programs" list. When I
first dragged it onto the desk top, it said I couldn't because I needed
administrator's permission (there is not one) but before I knew what was
happening, it had done so and now I cannot get it back. Is there a folder in
Explorer which contains this list, if so where is it? Then I could paste it
in.

Thanks Curt but I don't know where in Explorer to find the "all program"
list. Obviously, it won't paste into the list itself.

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs.

Hi, Bruce.

OK. Now I did it! Now I'm in the same situation as you - and, yes, I did
have to furnish Administrator credentials to move Microsoft Office from All
Programs to my Desktop.

But the fix is pretty easy (not that I've spent some time finding it).

Right-click on Start, then Explore. This opens the Start Menu folder in
Windows Explorer. There are only 2 items here (in my case): the
Desktop.ini file and the Programs subfolder. Click Programs to open that
folder. Then just drag the Microsoft Office icon from the Desktop and drop
it into Programs. Then click Start | All Programs again. Is Microsoft
Office there? It is for me. ;<)
