Windows Host Services has stopped working

I see this is not an unknown problem but I also don't see any reply that
fixes the issue so I will post again.

I am getting this error repeatedly and it is forcing a reboot as Windows
Explorer stops working. I am hoping someone has a suggestion so I don't have
to reformat as I am not paying MS $60.00 to fix there OS. I have Vista
Premium installed on 2 pc's and have been running it since it came out. It
only started doing this after my last reformat

Well you have a particular service that is crashing (and bringing down its
host), but you can't deduce much beyond that from that error message alone
(unless you work for MS). See if there are any other accompanying error
messages in event viewer which can help you identify the problematic
service.

StackHash_842b

Find that file on your system (probably StackHash_842b.dll, and examine it,
and see what program it relates to.

You may wish to precede that with a virus scan

I have the same problem, though it happens if I open anything, not just
control panel (looking through files, etc.) and it happens even more when i
open two such windows at once. My error report is:

More than likely you have installed a program
that has added something to Windows Explorer
shell/context menu. Maybe even an Internet
Explorer add-on. What programs have you installed
recently or since this started happening?

I was probably incorrect in my first response. There's probably no such
module.

I'm not sure exactly what it means, but there seem to be a number of threads
with this StackHash problem. You could peruse some of these to see if
there's an explanation amongst them

After looking through many of these discussion groups last night, I found one
that pointed out Microsoft FamilySaftey as the problem, which makes sense. A
quick registry fix, and I was all set.

You can't. It's just a place holder used when the stack is so
messed up windows can't even figure out where it was when it crashed. It's
not causing your problem but you can't figure out what is from this
information.

Hello,

Do you happen to have Nvidia Firewall installed on the machine such as
Network Access Manager or ActiveArmor Firewall? If so, there will likely be
a DLL called nvappfilter.dll in c:\windows\system32 directory. As a
troubleshooting step, you could use Add/Remove programs to uninstall that
program and see if it makes the problem go away. Please reply with your
results.

Have you Checked for Solutions? I don't see a Fault Bucket entry there,
which might be the key missing element. That data as it is isn't enough to
really point you to anything. You could use the Windows Debugging SDK to
debug this, but that sounds like overkill comparatively. =\

splitter..dats wat i can make out...it has left my pc completely
paralysed....cant even access the start menu...plz plz help

anything...GFG!!
On my pc it's Microsofts own software, their new Windows Live totally screws
up my pc so the simple answer for now is I just don't use their own product
and have switched all my contact info over to Yahoo
Not the best of solutions but as I can't even use an older version because
now it won't let you (another brilliant idea from the minds at MSN) it
appears there is no other choice

This is a crash in the nVidia nForce Network Access Manager.

Please ask them how to resolve this. I'm also interested in this.

SOLUTION is to uninstall by running the NAMSetup.exe on your Installation
Disk. I had such trouble reading through these posts to find the solution, I
decided to post myself. I just ran this file from my Motherboard install
disk: \Drivers\Chipset\32bit\XP\Ethernet\NAM\NAMSetup.exe
