| Downgrade vista ultimate to home premium
HI all, I have an laptop with windows vista ultimate which i used a cd to upgrade from xp. I am buying a new computer with windows vista home premium. Im planing to use Windows Easy Transfer Companion to transfer my apps, codes, user settings and so on. I want to use the cd i have to upgrade the new machine and downgrade the old one to vista premium thats coming with the new laptop. Is this possible. Do i have to call any microsft line to do this. Most importantly any charge? Thanks. |

I don't see a problem, just as long as you own an additional license for Vista Ultimate to upgrade the Vista Home Premium installation. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry "drewex" <drewex@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:A78E444C-1333-4AC6-BEEC-68FCF5A63C46@microsoft.com... > HI all, > I have an laptop with windows vista ultimate which i used a cd to upgrade > from xp. Yea but the upgrade cd is already used on my old machine. wouldnt that cause a problem in validation. You will probably have to activate by phone. However, you can't use the Vista Home Premium from the new laptop on the old laptop. First, laptops almost always use OEM SLP licenses, which are tied to specific hardware on the laptop. They are not transferable to other hardware. Second, if your Ultimate license is an upgrade (not full version), it needs to be installed on top of a qualifying version of Windows. The original Home Premium license on the new laptop becomes part of the Ultimate Upgrade. You can't re-use the Home Premium license. |

I don't think so because your first upgrade could have been screwed up and it is not the MS intend to make your life miserable. No, its the license that determines what can be installed, not the physical media. The only different here is that your media is an upgrade, the thing to take into consideration too is that you have a qualifying version of Windows Vista already installed. Its not the amount of times you have used the physical media. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry "drewex" <drewex@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8273DA11-AF32-499F-B67D-A0C0606B1035@microsoft.com... > Yea but the upgrade cd is already used on my old machine. wouldnt that > cause > a problem in validation. > > "Andre Da Costa[ActiveWin]" wrote: > >> I don't see a problem, just as long as you own an additional license for >> Vista Ultimate to upgrade the Vista Home Premium installation. >> -- >> Andre >> Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com >> My Vista Quickstart Guide: >> http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog...3DB!9709.entry >> "drewex" <drewex@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:A78E444C-1333-4AC6-BEEC-68FCF5A63C46@microsoft.com... >> > HI all, >> > I have an laptop with windows vista ultimate which i used a cd to >> > upgrade >> > from xp. Are you Mick one of the glorious Ubuntu crowd? Sort of a monolithic gang aren't you? Working in tandem, giving people deliberately erroneous advice and badmouthing people who advise them in good faith? Are you a Sub-Saharan too or you are more of a native, West Coast liberal brand, sort of a homegrown commie, a hater of capitalism which provides you with everything from cradle to grave? Are you one of the contributors to this remarkable website? https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1 I want to warn other posters who want to try it to wash their hands after clicking and run their antivirus without delay. It is also something people with some sense of English language and its abusers may find not really enjoyable but perhaps interesting. Is this possible No, there are three problems with putting Home Premium on the old computer: 1. You couldn't literally downgrade from Ultimate to Home Premium since downgrades are never supported. You would have to do a clean installation. 2. The EULA for the copy of Vista that will come with your new computer prohibits this. The copy of Vista Home Premium that comes with your laptop is an OEM version, and OEM versions are permanently tied by the EULA to the computer they come with. They can never legally be sold or given away without the computer, or transferred to another computer. 3. Most computers these days that come with preinstalled Windows have their copy of Windows BIOS-locked to the particular computer. You won't be able to use it on any other computer. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

Thanks all, Good knowlage I have one more question, I got iis and few ultimate(business) functions on my old laptop, I was gonig to use Windows Easy Transfer Companion to transfer over studio, office, codes in iis and so on. Well since the new laptop initally doesnt have some freatures. would this be a problem. and what type of transfer do you guys suggest to do, should i use Windows Easy Transfer Companion or just do clean installs of everything. I really dont want to go trough installing everything one by one. |

If you do not have Office on the new compter, what good does transfering office settings do? Transfer moves files and program settings, but does not reinstall programs on your new computer. Install your programs first then transfer over settings for that program. Mean Gene |
