    Hi,
My lap top is 64-bit processor, but it run 32-bit Vista. I am thinking of upgrade to 64-bit Vista. I would like to know if I upgrade my Vista to 64 bit. Could I able to install and run 32-bit software?
would you please give me some idea so I can make a decision to upgrade it or not?
    Thank you very much.

Yep, it can, but it cannot run 32 bit applications with 16 bit installers
    and uninstallers.

Re: 64bit vista can run 32bit program?

What 64bit program do you have or want to purchase that would make you want to switch? Most programs currently are written for the 32bit OS, and some are optimized for 64bit. If you are running something like AUTO-CAD where you could use lots of memory then I would suggest upgrading.

The usual programs, Office, Photoshop, Development tools, etc... are fine in 32bit. Also, with 64bit, it is harder to get drivers for devices. Better to stay with 32bit if you can.

    Hope that helps.

    =====

Yes you would generally be able to run 32- bit apps - unless their
manufacturer tells you they won't - but there are two more important
    questions.

    1) Why do you think you want a 64-bit OS?
    2) Are there actually 64-bit drivers for your computer's hardware?

If there aren't drivers available, you will only render sections of your
system non-functional by switching to the 64- bit OS.

And if your laptop won't accept more than 4 gig of RAM, there is even less
    reason to switch.

    Thank you very much.
The reason I want to change is the 32-bit is not able upgrade to 4GB of RAM.
I am not worring about the drivers because I can exchange to the same system
running 64-bit Vista. What I concerning about is if I able to install 32 bit
    version applications?
Thank you for all your help.

As I noted earlier, 32 bit applications work just fine on Windows Vista.

Re: 64bit vista can run 32bit program?

You MUST have 64 bit drivers for all your devices: Printers, cameras, etc,
to use them in 64bit O/S.

You can run 32bit programs, but not 16 bit. Careful, some 32bit programs
    use 16 bit installers!

Re: 64bit vista can run 32bit program?

What applications do you run that make you think you need that much
RAM? Unless you run particularly memory-hungry applications, having
that much RAM will make no difference to your performance.
