Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymore

If I use Remote Desktop or Remote Desktops MMC and check "Connect to Console"
all my sessions will be connected as standard remote desktop session to my
Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server Server 2008 RC.

Same if I try to connect using "mstsc /console". I'm not able to make a
remote console session anymore like it was possible with Vista RTM / Windows
XP before.

Is this a know bug? Does anybody has a work around for this?

Thanks, Herbert

Re: Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymore

You should be posting this on the beta forum for Vista Service Pack 1.
SP1 is still in beta even though you are using a Release Candidate.
There should be information on the site where you got SP1 as to how to
report, discuss bugs.

I'm using the public available RC1 version which I downloaded from MSDN.
Where should I go to report/discuss this bug?

I can not find a place to go inside the MSDN portal. So I think this is the
right place to talk about things like that.

I digged into this issue seeing that the "Remote Desktops" MMC on my Vista
system comes from Windows Server 2003 SP2 Admin Tools.

So for everybody who updates his Vista machine to SP1 RC1 should know that
based on the new RDP 6.1 client which comes with SP1 --> Remote Desktops MMC
"Connect to Console" using W2K3 admin tools will not work anymore.

It's irrelevant here as all beta is posted on a separate newgroup.

RE: Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymore

I found out: Using the new syntax "mstsc /admin" works for "Remote Desktop"
console session.

"Remote DesktopS" MMC and checking "Connect to Console" does not work with
Windows Vista SP1 RC1.

If I use the MMC from W2K8RC1 on a W2K8 Server it works.

Seems to be a bug in Vista RC1. Please let me know if anymody has a
workaround for this problem in Vista RC1.

Thanks a lot, Herbert

Re: Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymo

That Seems To Be The Main Problem With The MSDN And Microsoft Tech Net
Releases Of Windows Vista Service Pack One, Release Candidate 1, Us MSDN And
Tech Net Plus Subscriber's Have No Place To Go To Discuss Any Issues That
Occur With This New Release, And According To What Peter Foldes Told Me The
Following: We Must Obey The Beta Tester NDA Until The Beta Becomes Publicly
Available, Just FYI

Re: Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymore

I'm in the same boat here guys. Testing out the Vista SP1 RC1 & lost my
RDP to Win2k3 Server Console . I'm trying to figure out all of the
files needed to revert back to the pre sp1 rc1 rdp. Anyone figured out
all of the associated files yet?

ah yes as said above /admin works instead of using /console yay! no more
shadow 0 or having to login 2x... thanks for figuring that out, I thought I
was going crazy!

Problem also in XP SP3?

I have the same problem. Noticed it after installation of SP3, not sure it is connected but since MS has incorporated some VISTA stuff in SP3...

Workaround with /admin works.
Remote Desktops fails to connect to console however...

Re: Vista SP1 RC1 - Connect to Console via RDP does not work anymore

In Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, the console session (session 0) is a noninteractive session that is reserved for services. So the /admin switch, or /console switch does not work regardless, and it is ignored.

Running mstsc /console was the same as having:
connect to console:i:1 in the rdp file (Version 5 of mstsc)

Running mstsc /admin is the same as having:
administrative session:i:1 in the rdp file (Version 6.x of mstsc)

These ONLY work if you are connecting to a 2003 based server, if you are connecting to a 2008 based server the 'console session' cannot be logged into at all.
