Can't open documents from windows xp in windows vista

Hi! I recently transferred all of my documents that were saved in Microsoft
Word on my old Windows XP computer to my new Windows Vista computer. I tried
to open a couple and they will not open and are saved in an adobe format. I
do not have Microsoft Word on my new computer, just the word processor that
is in the Microsoft Works program. Do I need to install my Microsoft Office
2002 suite to get these documents to open?

Thanks!

If they are in Adobe format (.pdf) then you need the free Adobe reader.
Start at Adobe.com and download the free reader.

You need to have Microsoft Word installed which is sold as a stand alone
product or a part of the Microsoft Office suite. Microsoft Word is also
included in the Microsoft Works Suite product. PDF files require the Adobe
Reader to view them, you can download it at the following link:

What do you mean by "and are saved in an adobe format"? What adobe
format? How do you know that? What is the extension (the last three
characters after the dot) of their file names? Is it not .doc?

Then that is obviously why you can't open them.

No, that is not compatible, as you've found out.

No, you don't *need* to; that's only one choice. Although you *can* do
that, you can also install any of several other compatible programs
that can read and edit .doc files, such as WordPerfect, OpenOffice, or
another version of Microsoft Word.

You can also open these files by downloading the free Word viewer from
Microsoft, but that will only let you open and view them, not edit
them or create new ones, which I suspect you also want to do.

Installing your old Office 2002 is probably the best choice for you.
