Need ot run chkdsk, Vista says I need elevated mode

Facing a strange problem with my Windows Vista desktop. I am the only administrator of this computer. I attached an External Hard Drive on which i want to run Disk Check. Whenever i try to run the command 'chkdsk L:\' in DOS prompt, it gives me an error message saying something i dont have sufficient privileges and I need to be in elevated mode. Thats ridiculous, i mean being the only Admin if i dont have the sufficient privileges then who has?

Any idea what is wrong? How can i fix it?

In windows vista though you are the Administartor and logged in with Admin account, whenever you launch any application it opens with Standard User privileges. Thats the new security feature in Vista. Hence what you need to do is first run the command prompt as an Administrator by right clicking CMD and then run your command chkdsk L:\

I've be reading your replies about right clicking on the command prompt to activate "run as administrator". Please explain more about this because I have right clicked so many places and don't get the option of "run as administrator". Doing this with running checkdisk.exe

    Thank you. I'll try it.

I was looking for help on this matter also. Saw this somewhere:

You may also want to do this. Right click on Command Prompt (Start
    Menu\Programs\Accessories), and choose
Run as Administrator. Copy the following, and Paste it after the prompt.

    sfc /SCANFILE="C:\Windows\System32\chkdsk.exe"

    Press Enter.

    Hope it works for you.

Partial information is missing here on the first solution..

    Go to START
Then instead of selecting RUN and typing CMD there go to
SEARCH and type in CMD and it will come up with the
    CMD.exe command
Right click there to get the RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR option

so basically i did this, search "cmd" in the start menu>open file location> "select cmd.exe" hit "alt button"> file>run as adminisatrator then type in "format X: /fs:fat32" be sure to have a raw allocation on the drive, this worked for my half terabyte so it should work up to 2tb

    Try This:
Go to: START>ALL Programs>Accessories>Right Click; on the Command Promt You will get a menu it starts with OPEN, Run as Administrator, Open File Location etc
You want to left click on the secound item in the list or the
    RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
if it is the therd or lower down the list it is usualy the secound one on the list, doing this will open the Command Promt window as the admin.
    Enjoy
    Rollie
