| how to repair windows defender in vista 64
I want to do a repair of windows defender in Vista 64 Windows defender works ok,but the icon keeps disappearing from the icon tray. I never know whether it's running or not.I can excite the program in the start-programs & the icon will appear. When I re-boot icon disappears again.I was told to put systray.exe in the start-up & this fixed it for one re-boot.After that the shortcut does not work. So.....how to repair windows defender in vista 64?(without re-installing Vista 64). |

To keep the Windows Defender icon in the notification area (tray bar), check these settings in Windows Defender: 1. Open Window Defender 2. Click Tools 3. Click Options 4. Scroll down a bit, and look at the bottom of the section "Real-time protection options" for "Choose when the Windows Defender icon appears in the notification area:". 5. Check "Always" 6. Click Save |

I wouldn't worry about the disappearing icon. Here are 2 ways to check if defender is running: 1. right click on the shield in the icon tray and open security center. Defender should be listed. 2. hit ctrl-alt-del and start task manager. look for "MSASCui.exe" under processes no need to repair i would think |

Do you have "Hide inactive icons" checked in the Start menu's "Customize" area? Take a look at this tutorial. If you do, then either uncheck it or make sure that "Show" is selected (step 7) for the Windows Defender icon. |

Well, it looks like we looked at all the easy common areas. If it is a problem with a system file, then the "sfc /scannow" (no quotes) command may fix the problem for you. This tutorial will show you how. If not, then there is the more drastic Repair Install. This will allow you to repair your Vista installation without loosing your files, settings, and programs. You may need to reinstall your drivers again afterwards though. This will show you how. Other than a clean install, these are the only options I know left to try. Hope the help. |

Well, I'm stumped now too. It may be a bug that hopefully will be addressed when the Vista SP1 will be released in the rumored Q1 of 2008. I have the same thing happening with my 64 bit Vista Utlimate. Because of this and other annoyances and lack 3rd party support for drivers, etc. I'm seriously considering reinstalling with the 32 bit version. |

I found the fix!!! 1. End this process in task manager: MSASCui.exe 2. Stop this service from running: windefend 3. Download up date from. x32 - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link...14&clcid=0x409 x64 - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Link...55&clcid=0x409 4. Extract the file using winrar. 5. Copy the files and paste them into each folder located in: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Definition Updates\ 6. Restart the windefend service Now you are updated. Windows Defender will continue to update. Thats how you manually update windows defender. |
