I do not want to delete exisiting partition so if extended is not
possible then how to create dynamic partition?
You can only create an extended partition if you have less than four primary
partitions.
I have never used dynamic partitions. Here is some info on that subject:
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks...tml/wwhelp.htm
Vista Disk Management only creates primary partitions. If you need to create
extended partitions use a 3rd party partition tool.

That should be:
Vista Disk Management only creates primary partitions. If you need to create
extended logical partitions use a 3rd party partition tool. An extended
partition is a primary partition.
If you're feeling adventurous, use diskpart.exe.
<http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/26/using-diskpartexe-as-disk-management-alternative-in-windows-vista-2000-2003-and-xp/>
Wrong information! Vista Disk Management creates also extended partitions and logical drives.
microsoft.com says:
"When you create partitions on a basic disk using Disk Management, the first three volumes you create will be formatted as primary partitions. Beginning with the fourth volume, each volume will be configured as a logical drive within an extended partition."
(http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Win...129a71033.mspx, you have to click 'Show all' in order to see that text.)
In case one doesn't want to have 3 primary partitions, it should be possible to create three small primary partitions and delete two of them later, as suggested here: http://www.optimizingpc.com/install/...gharddisk.html.
You could use the diskpart command from an elevated command prompt to create
an extended partition.

Hi Kerry - Thanks for that tip. I am in that exact situation and it sounds like I am going to have to use the diskpart command. But I am a bit worried about all the warning statements in that page that you lnked to above. I am no systems expert. I've done some command line work - batch scripts, etc. but not dealing with disks/partitions. Should I go ahead and give this a shot or are there any third party tools that can accmplish this job well?
Thanks,
Srini
