| After 5 clean installs, still can't install Creator 10 on Ultimate
It has been suggested that I reinstall Ultimate. I upgrade from XP to Home Premium then to Ultimate. But I want to be sure that this is necessary before I attempt to do it. This is my situation. My Computer is a Dell Dimension 8400, Intel Pentium 4, 3 GB of RAM and about 150GB of free harddrive space. I upgraded to Vista Home Premium from XP and then upgraded to Ultimate. I have a Radeon X1300 256MB video card. I have Windows Install Clean Up and Windows Installer. My last instructions was to do a clean install by going to the command prompt and entering “Net user administrator /active:yes”. I followed the instructions to the letter and got the same results. The clean install requires that you: Uninstall Roxio by using Windows Uninstall/Install from the Control Panel or Windows Install Clean Up. I have done it both ways. Disable Startup and Services (checking to hide Microsoft services) Go to Program Files, Common Files, User Files and deleted Roxio and Sonic Folders Go to the registry and delete Roxio and Sonic folders from HKEY_CURRENT_USER AND HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE folders software folder. Install Roxio As I said, I have done this at least 5 times with the same results. The results are: After the installation is complete a Resource Loader: LoadImage method window comes up. It says: “Skin image “MenuSeparator.png” found but cannot be loaded.” I believe this has something to do with the Audio/Video Converter gadget, but I am not sure. When I click OK, a Runtime Error message comes up: “Program: ...mon Files\Roxio Shared\10.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray10.exe” When I click on the Suite icon, it takes ten minutes for it to load. It continues to run the “Gathering required information” over and over again. It reaches a point where it says it has about 14 seconds left, then it starts all over again and does this for 10 minutes. When the Welcome screen opens up and when I click on VideoWave or MyDVD, a window opens that has ERROR in the top bar and says: “ERROR: Unable to load skin” If I click on other programs, either this message appears or a Runtime error window appears. |

I had a similar problem with Roxio; you are probably going to need to use "Smarty Uninstaller" (see below). I'm convinced that trying to download and install an update over the older version can lead to corruption of the install producing any number of error messages and non-functioning of the program or failure of the new install and corruption of the older version as well. In order to install a new or different version of an application type, often the existing application or program has to be completely uninstalled first. The Windows Uninstall program is less than optimum at doing this and frequently leaves remnant files and folders or registry entries of the uninstalled program on your computer. Some software companies provide an uninstall tool on their support website (i.e. AdobeFlash, Norton, McAfee) which can help with this process, but often even these special uninstaller tools leave remnants of the program on your computer that can block or degrade the installation of the new program. You can further clean up your computer manually as outlined in the following tutorial: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/87...ram-vista.html I have since found and used a program called "Smarty Uninstaller" that does an even better job of uninstalling programs, even tough ones like McAfee and Norton. You scan your computer and the program identifies all the programs on your computer, listing those that have their own uninstaller program and those that are only remnants of a program. First you click for it to use the program's uninstaller, and then when it’s finished, Smarty UI identifies any program remnants and will then uninstall the remnants (from files and folders to registry entries). One other thought: some people who have upgraded from XP to Vista have had problems due to XP remnants interfering with Vista. I don't know if you will find this or not, but I downloaded Smarty Uninstaller and only found one reference to Roxio and that was in the System (Hidden)Component area. When I clicked to uninstall it, a window opened saying this was not recommended. So I left it. If you do find this, please let me know what I should do. Removal of Roxio should have been straight forward in the Control Panel Program list but often not all the files are removed and you may find Icons on the desk top and entries in your start up folder. You might think you upgraded to Vista, but I'm afraid you downgraded. I've had Vista for almost a year and getting rid of it. Your problems are only starting. | EMC 10 won't install on Vista
I've had all the problems everyone else has had trying to install EMC 10 on a Vista machine. Now I read here that I also have to remove all remnants of XP. But I have both XP and Vista on my PC so that I can still run programs on XP that don't run on Vista. If I completely remove XP, then I can't use those programs at all, so this "solution" doesn't seem to be of much value! Whether the problem lies in EMC 10 or Vista I don't know, but the product shouldn't be sold unless it works. To me, "it works" means that the program shouldn't have trouble locating its own files, it shouldn't keep trying to reinstall iteslef every time the application is opened, and runtime errors shouldn't pop up when you try to do something! For what it's worth, Roxio gave up on trying to help me after I tried everything they suggested over a two week period. And I'm sorry, but suggestions like, "Well, just erase all your hard drives, reinstall Vista, reinstall EMC 10, and never install any other software on your machine and it might work," aren't really suggestions. The product has some serious problems - period. |
