Rebooting at 'configuring updates 3 of 3. 0% complete

    Hello

I still need more log files for the investigation that we are doing:

If people are running into this can you send me the log files.

Can you send me some of the log files from the system?
    %windir%\logs\cbs\*.*
    %windir%\WindowsUpdate*.log
    %windir%\inf\setupapi.dev.log
    %windir%\winsxs\poqexec.log (if exists)
    %windir%\winsxs\pending.* (if exists)
    %windir%\Performance\WinSAT\Datastore\*.*
    %windir%\System32\winevt\Logs\application.evtx
Try booting to the Windows Vista DVD, choose the repair option in the lower
    left-hand corner.
Choose to boot to a CMD prompt, copy the log files to a temp folder (or
    onto removable media if available)

while in the repair more after copying the files to a temp location, you
should be able to choose the system restore option.
This should get you back operational.
Then send me the log file.
Remove the online section from the email name listed here before sending
    darrellg@online.microsoft.com.

This is the blog on the issue:

Fixing Windows Vista Home Premium after installing KB937287 "Windows
    Update"
In Microsoft Vista Home Premium, there was a screwed up update.
It kept rebooting the computer and displayed this message: "Configuring
Updates Stage 3 of 3" and would go from 0% to 100% before rebooting
again. Safe mode offered no help as the same thing happened. Going into
System Restore said there were no valid restore points because something
wasn't running. I called 1-866-pcsafety and they helped me through this
    resolution.

To resolve this - get to a command prompt:
The command prompt may display as "X:" - if it does, type "C:" and
press enter (changing the location to the boot drive).
Change directory to the "C:\Windows\winsxs" folder by typing:
    " CD \ " (press Enter)
    " CD \Windows\winsxs " (press Enter)
Rename the file named "Pending.xml" to something else by typing:
    "ren pending.xml pending.xxx" (press Enter)
Run regedit by typing "Regedit" and press Enter.
Search for the entry with this description: "Advanced installer need
    resolving"
    and delete it.
Search for the entry: "Pending.xml identifier" (which will be 2 lines
or so after the first one) and delete it.
End the Regedit and reboot. You should be OK.

This is a post of my great interest.
Did you let the system boot from the Vista setup DVD and got into the
command prompt mode? Another word how did you get to the command prompt
when the VISTA is unable to boot?

    Hello,
If you follow those steps, then you need to backup your data and reinstall
    the OS.
Servicing on those systems is now in a unknown state which will affect
    future updates
note the warnings in the article.

942968 Stop error when you try to download updates from Windows Update on a
computer that is running Windows Vista: "0x80070246"

    Darrell,
You may be reight about reinstalling the OS, but I didn't have to.
After those steps, it booted up and has been right as rain for a week
now (as near as I can tell). Sad state of affairs that I have 9 hours
invested in a customer's computer but can't charge for it.

    Hello,
Because we don't know which updates were in the process of installing,
until you attempt to do something with those updates, like modify them in
Add\remove Programs, or install another update that changes that component,
you may not notice any issue.
But future changes to that component could be broken.
    Thanks,
