I have three physical IDE hard drives and a DVD writer.
PS2 mouse and keyboard. The only USB devices I have plugged in are an HP
scanner and a SkypeMate device. Those are both installed properly and
work properly.

Don't have a USB hard drive.

It shows up as a drive letter.

Actually, the problem you describe is fairly rare, and I can't
remember what this type of conflict is actually called, but the best
way to troubleshoot it is to remove components one at a time and re-
install them one at a time. (It's similar to two devices trying to use
the same IRQ.)

Lots of reboots.

The new drive triggered the problem, but may not be the problem.
Try listing all devices by connection under device manager and
resources by connection to see if anything is trying to use the same
connection. They may state they are working, so you'll have to check
actual addresses being used.

The Event Log may also be able to give you information on critical
errors, but it may be pointing to the wrong device as the cause of the
problem.

You state you have 3 IDE drives and a DVD drive. Is the external
connected via a 40-pin cable or a USB cable. Is it on the same strand
as another drive? CD/DVD drives don't always mix well being on the
same strand as an IDE drive.

Is the LightScribe function actually working in Vista? (This may be
the Unknown Device.) Something about this device is haunting me. Mine
stopped working a while back and I just got rid of it. (Didn't use it
much.) I'd disconnect this drive first, reboot and see if the "Need
Driver" issue is still present.

No external drives. The DVD-Writer is seondary slave on an 80 pin cable.

I don't believe I tried LightScribe in Vista. I did burn a few CD's in
Vista and that part worked OK. I'm kind of dissappointed wtih LightScribe
myself. It takes longer to burn the label than it does the data...
especially if you double-burn the label.

Sorry for the weird address on the last post, but I'm at work and all
posting functionality was turned off so I used the dreaded Google Group to
post. While it's a valid address, I never look at... (I did once, I think it
had 2000+ junkmail items in only three days of use :) In the meantime, I
figured out how to get newgroups turned on here.

I don't know why I keep thinking you have an external drive. Okay... you
don't.

Most likely problem:
1. Lightscribe "driver" (utility)
Possible fix, run the driver in XP compatibility mode. Check HP
website or Google for details. (This is a known Vista issue that is
supposedly fixed. Check for updates.)
2. HDD and DVD on same cable.
Even if it works okay, the slowest drive sets the pace for both.
But, disconnecting the DVD drive for a short period should determine if this
is the issue.
