Hang on Vista boot - appears to be at crcdisk.sys

The machine, running 32 bit Vista Home premium, was fine yesterday, today it
hangs at crcdisk.sys. No config changes, no intentionally installed
software. I tried to boot to safe mode, it hangs. I tried Vista install
disk "repair" option, which also hangs. Computer is passing hardware
    diagnostics (disk, controller, memory...).
Looks like this is not a uncommon issue by looking at forums, but I'm not
seeing any common root cause explanations for the issue. Any suggestions for
    cause and repair?

That is usually the last item loaded, and since the list shows the loaded
items, not the hang item, you appear to have loaded your drivers. You
should disconnect all hardware that is attached that you don't need to start
your computer and see if you can boot. Safe mode also loads minimum
drivers, so the fact you can't get into safe mode also mitigates against
    drivers.

I have the exact same issue with an HP Pavillion TX 1080ea.

System stops working on crcdisk.sys. I've tried all the options in the f8 screens, all the options from the 'repair' menu on the Vista DVD. Using the command prompt i've tried chkdsk /f and sfc /scanow. Chkdsk hangs the machine and does nothing. Sfc won't run either.

Disk Utilities in the bios say the HDD is ok and memory test say the same.

I've tried reinstalling Vista and that hangs too.

System Restore says that the HDD needs to be checked and then it hangs while the check occurs.

Using the Vista DVD I can access the HDD via command prompt and all files on it.

I'm at the end of my tether!

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Jim

If you are wondering about crcdisk.sys showing as the last driver loaded in
Safe Mode, it is the last driver successfully loaded. If there is a next
driver failing to load it is not shown. In other words, the problem
wouldn't be with the last driver showing but the next one. Anyway, I think
that crcdisk.sys is the last one so the hang is probably while control is
    passing to the next stage.
