I HATE VISTA

I don't suppose this will be allowed to stay on here, but I have to vent. I
got Vista with my new Dell computer, and so far, I have had to replace 4
programs that don't run on vista, and for which the companies "don't plan any
upgrades in the near future". This has cost me a lot of money that I don't
have. The computer was a large expense for me, and now it is getting
rediculous. I am now looking unsuccessfully for a simple photo editing
software program that will run that has the features my old program had, and
I am very frustrated. Knowing what I know now, I would have never had Vista,
and would have paid extra to have XP put on my new computer. Thank you for
letting me vent.

Re: I HATE VISTA

I know it is a little too late.
but there is an upgrade advisor on ms vista web site to evaluate your computer before upgrade.
even a new one you could have run it against your old one to check the programs.

it is not perfect by any means but a good starting place.

It's no accident that you're being fleeced. Microsoft made conscious
design choices with Vista to ensure it would be incompatible with older
hardware and software.

After all, what good does it do Microsoft's shareholders to know that
people with 5-year-old XP systems are still satisfied with what they've
got???

I would suggest you contact Dell customer service and ask them if you can
exchange your Vista license for an XP license. Scuttlebutt has it that
people who are persistent with such requests eventually get what they
want. At the very least, you should let Dell know that you are not happy
with Vista.

Many , Many older programs that don't (officialy) work with Vista, really do
work fine, some require you run the compatability wizzard as XP sp2. And
some, do require replacement....give them a try (except a/v or disk mgmt
software) and see what happens.

Also, you should try a virtual machine, such as Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007
or innotek's VirtualBox.

These will let you run legacy apps very successfully. Of course, you would
need an XP licence...

Well that's all very interesting

Don't get me wrong, it's difficult to upgrade, especially when you don't understand the nuances of industry. And you find yourself unprepared.

But I think one should really consider what they are doing by upgrading. To hate Vista is to hate yourself.

One doesn't set out to buy a brand new car, by checking for reverse compatibility. As long as it runs on gas (or something cheaper) you are generally happy, right? Making sure your old seats, old headlights, and dash board from the other car will fit in the new car would sound silly, and absurd.

I was disappointed when XP came out being so reverse compatible, because I thought it would be a big security risk, and it was. Sometimes reverse compatibility is a bullet we shoot ourselves in the foot with. It took MS, what? Two extra years to release Vista so they could make it more like Apple’s Mac OSX, and like Sun’s Solaris, and like other Linux flavors. They had to make it secure. Which is funny because Gates used to tout NT (the basis of XP, and Vista) as superior to Unix/Linux. And now they mimic it.

HOMEWORK:
As for the wise consumer, do your homework FIRST. And don’t just read reviews from disgruntled XP loyalists, and hardcore Linux and Apple users. There are many ways to confirm that you are ready.

MS did provide the Upgrade Advisor app. I don’t trust it though.

What many people don’t realize is you can trial install XP or Vista, for 30 days, no key, no activation; and if you like it, you can buy the “Genuine Advantage Kit for XP” at $149, thru the Windows Update interface before the end of the 30 days. So heck, borrow a friends copy, or download an ISO. (Not their key/license)
Vista it will refer you to a site to purchase a license for the edition you’ve tested.
(This is to me the most reliable way of obtaining the information you need on compatibility, but if there is trouble it gets rather involved)
(And they wouldn’t offer the trial, or the link to purchase a license if they had a problem with you doing this. *I don't endorse piracy, if you like it, buy a license)

Also for Vista, there is a “Virtual Hard Drive” 30 day trial you can download, and run on a “virtual” machine, with Virtual PC. (Within your old OS, without any real changes to what you have already.)

And finally there is the Vista Ultimate Test Drive. Where you can test out the interface and such online.

So don’t complain! There are a bunch of way to determine if your software, and/or hardware are up to snuff, if you didn’t know that is your own fault.

LOL, LOL and LOL you are sooooooo stupid. I see stupid people, and
you're one of the stupidest with a one track mind and blinders on. On
the hand, you post that you don't want to play the game. While on the
other hand you're too weak not to play the game.

Where is Frank? You go into your purse right now and give me all of your
money, so I won't have to work for it and save some time.

We'll play the 3 Card Molly game on you. I'll get Frank to bet a little
bit and let him win. You'll get your nose and eyes wide open thinking
you can win, and we'll take all of your money walk away. :)
