| Vista gives access denied to shared XP printer
I have private home network with a new Vista Home Premium computer. Vista sees the XP computer that has the officejet V40 printer. But whenever I try to connect a message says access is denied. what is up with that! Who says access is denied, it is my computer and my private network. How do I allow access to my own network? how many hoops do I have to jump through to network to a printer. This should be a seamless operation and already too much time has been wasted. Nice job microsoft! |

A note on the guest account. When sharing is enabled using the XP network setup wizard, this account is enabled. So by default, if you are sharing something, this account should be enabled. -- Alan Morris Windows Printing Team Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. more hoops stilll access is denied message comes up when connecting to printer. I am looking into port configurations with Norton, to see if that helps. "Daniel" wrote: > Hi, > > Here's a complete answer: > http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx > > Cheers, > Daniel > > > |

| RE: Vista gives access denied to shared XP printer
Check the following: on the vista machine go to the command prompt (cmd) In this environment, enter 'dir \\myXP\print$' where myXP is the hostname of the XP machine. If all works out correctly, this should return the contents of that directory. If it's not, you're having a network problem - and not a printer problem. Here's a solution: On the XP machine - enable the guest account - create an account: user + password (exactly the same as on the vista machine) On the Vista machine - create an account: user + password (exactly the same as on the XP machine) - log on with this account - Open the network environment (this should show the vista machine and the myXP machine) - double click on the myXP machine: the shared printer should show up. If this is the case connect to the shared printer, and you're done... I hope this will get it working! Daniel |

If I am understading everything correctly. I thought I needed to install the vista driver on my xp machine. The Vista is running driver version 6.0.6000.16386 and my XP is running driver 5.0. Is the driver availible to download and will that fix the problem? I have not tried the previous threads with the hoop jumping. If this is a simple solution let me know. Yes you can install the inbox Vista drivers on XP. Perform this using Vista as the client and add the driver to the remote machine by browsing to the remote machine and opening the remote printers folder. -- Alan Morris Windows Printing Team Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[ln];kbhowto This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I continued to have problems, even after the notebook running Vista recognized the two network printers I have at home. I continued to get the "Access Denied" message. To rectify, here were the steps: 1) Click START 2) PRINTERS 3) ADD 4) Choose ADD LOCAL PRINTER 5) CREATE NEW PORT 6) LOCAL PORT 7) NEXT 8) \\computername\\printer share name [Note: to obtain this go to the pc that hosts the printer, go to Printer and Faxes, pick the printer, right click the icon and choose Sharing and the Share Name shows in that window.] 9) click "Next" or "Continue" to follow the rest of the steps to connect to the printer. 10) Repeat 1 - 9 to add additional printers "Alan Morris [MSFT]" wrote: > Yes you can install the inbox Vista drivers on XP. | Re: Vista gives access denied to shared XP printer
3 computers: one Vista Home Premium, two XP Home SP2 machines. I had same problem and used same solution. Yet, I still can not access the XP Computer from Vista machine (Access Denied) to see the printer and a shared folder I set up on the XP machine. However, I can see the XP printer and folders on my other XP machine in the same network. Any assistance will be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! This worked like a charm! Total frustration has turned into being a happy camper. I was able to network to hubby's printer and could see the printer on the other computer but access was denied when i tried to select it. This solution was perfect. Again, thank you. Nice job microsoft! I encountered this problem still (feb 2009). In many forums this link is named for an answer: 'http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx' (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx) This is no help, because it describes how VISTA shares printers, but the problem is to share a printer on a XP system so you can use the printer on the Vista machine. I found out the anwer to be: * open configuration / printers * select 'add printer' * choose LOCAL printer * select 'new port' and then 'local port' (not an IP port !) * as port name use \\HOSTCOMPUTERNAME\PRINTERNAME where hostcomputername is the name of the pc the printer is fysically attached to and printer name is the shared name of the printer (you can look this up on the XP machine or by browsing network neighbourhood on vista machine) * select the driver for this printer (by default it will select some printerdriver that is already installed on the vista machine, which usually isn't correct, so browse and select correct one) This did the trick for me. -- LennoxB |
