In the Start Search box of the Start Menu, type services.msc. Is the Windows Firewall service set to be Automatic at startup? In the Start Menu type devmgmt.msc, and open Device Manager. On the View tab, choose "Devices by connection" and put a check next to "Show hidden devices". Look for Windows Firewall Authorization Driver (it will have a gold gear icon). Double-click that, and on the Driver tab, make sure the Startup type is set to "Demand". |

Right, I've got to the 'sevices' window but i don't have a view tab or anything where i can choose 'show hidden devices'. The only tabs are 'extended' and 'standard' and the only mention of 'view' is on the top menu and doesn't have the required option. Windows firewall shows with a blue gear wheel (so i assume its not the right one), when i go into it it gives start up options of 'automatic' (which it was already set to), automatic (delayed start), manual and disabled - no option for for 'demand' |

Your Services setting looks to be fine. You can close that window. The second thing I was talking about is a different console, called devmgmt.msc, or Device Manager. This where you'll find View in the menu. |

sorry, my bad, it's still doing it - also noticed that the firewall turns off every time the wireless internet connection drops off Mine does the same thing only when connecting or reconnecting to the internet. Any fixes yet?? A long time passed since this thread; I have exactly the same problem, is there a solution yet?? |

Yes, a VERY long time. And though you quoted a lot of material, it included more than one post/reply and is difficult to read. You should start a new thread, and give a detailed description of your problem and what you have already tried to do to fix it. |

My problem is exactly as described in this and several other threads: The Windows firewall on my Acer 5715Z laptop with Vista Home Basic reverts to OFF when the laptop wakes up from standby or after turning it on. I defined it as ON several times, and I also checked all the suggestions in this thread (the CAPS at the end of the steps are my answer): 1. In the Start Search box of the Start Menu, type services.msc. Is the Windows Firewall service set to be Automatic at startup? YES, IT IS 2. YES, IT IS. |

That seems to be a problem common to Acer laptops dating back well over a year. I have no answer, and cannot find one. The closes I came was one that suggested that a lot of Acer systems came preinstalled with Norton Internet Security and after the trial period expired it was either interfering, or an uninstall was incomplete and it was still interfering. The rationale being that two firewalls running together, one will lose... usually Vista's. Check that out. If it doesn't help, you might try installing the free version of Zone Alarm. |

| Re: Windows firewall in Vista Windows security centre
The laptop came with McAfee trial which I removed and installed AVG (antivirus, no firewall). I installed the Comodo firewall and it seems Ok for the one day I have it. I hope it will not cause other problems; if it will not work our I will try the Zone Alarm. I can cope with it but I am wondering how two reputable firms, MS and Acer, let this serious security issue unsolved!!! This is supposed to be a turnkey system for the ordinary guy! |

| Re: Windows firewall in Vista Windows security centre
Comodo is probably better. Zone Alarm had some recent problems with one of the MS updates. I'm not sure that's been fixed. I had some problems with ZA some years ago and just stopped using it. Your guess is as good as anyone's. But I'd put the blame on Acer, before Microsoft. |

After two weeks with Comodo I am happy to say that I had no problems. It is a little too verbose and warns about every little program, even the Window ones, but it remembers what I allow and it quiets down with time. So the problem is "solved". |
