Internet connection stops working every few days

    Hi,

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate. My Internet connection stops working
every few days. When this happens, I cannot browse any sites. I am not using
any firewall except Windows Defender. I am connected to the Internet through
a router. I also have another PC connected to this router running XP and that
    works fine.

I want to mention that if I have a P2P such as DC++ software open, the
transfer (download/upload) does not stop. So basically the internet
connection exists, but I cannot browse any sites. Restarting the PC fixes
this. Anyone knows what causes this?

    Thank you,
    Marin Micoriciu

you have to impose upload limits on the Direct Connect program.
set it for half of your upload speed

Thanks for you reply! Unfortunately I already tried that. In fact, I closed
the Direct Connect program but nothing. I use FTP a lot. When I try to ftp to
a server, I get an errror like "Connect failed". Only a reboot fixes this.
    Any more ideas? :/

Don't no... what usualy happens is that P2P programs use all the upload
bandwich, and the upload is generaly the week spot of your connections.
if that is not the problem then we can only especulate...

when you close the DC program, does the transfers stop, or they keep
    running?

does this only happens when you are running DC?

    Hello!
I have the same problem with Vista Ultimate x86. Since now, I couldn't
find any answer. You don't need a P2P program running to have this to
happen. You can only start browsing like normal and after a while the
internet connection can stop. It's really annoying to restart your
computer everytime you need to surf the net...
Any help will be very appreciated!
    Thanks in advance!

Are we talking a wireless network or wired?

Some wireless cards seem to be a bit defective so it might be hardware,
if not wireless then it may be a driver problem with your card or the
device built into the motherboard, in which case have you checked for
the latest drivers at that manufacturer's website?

It may help to mention the motherboard / network card model because
someone with the same hardware might recognize a problem.

No, we are talking about wired connection. I've tried 4 different
network cards but I had the same result!
All I can think now is that Microsoft managed to insert another shitty
shield against pirating or something like that...

    Abit AN8 Ultra 939, D-Link DFE-528TX Network Card.

try a different PCI slot or a USB adapter.
and go into properties for the NIC and turn off the 'allow windows to turn
this device off to save power' setting

Re: Internet connection stops working every few days

I guess, I noticed the same issue with my (legal) Vista Ultimate x86.
Sometimes it happens that the network connection fails.
However, I noticed some special things:
    * It seems that only new connections are blocked. So, for example, when I
open a website, or try to open a new FTP connection.
    * Existing connections (for example: IRC, ...) keeps working.
    * On this PC, Internet Connection Sharing is enabled. So behind this PC,
there are some other PC's . The strange thing is, when I can't surf the
internet anymore, It's possible to do that on one of the pc's behind this
    computer.

I have the same stituation like you with a shared connection.

I've had this problem. My current best guess is that there are a
limited number outbound connection numbers. Then apps that open, then
close, then open new connections might overload this number and no new
connections can be made. I noticed this when using Azureus. I could go
for some time before I could not make new connections, but currently
open connections would still work. No browser worked. I could usually
PING and TRACERT. Don't remember trying to FTP.

But what's been causing big problems is watching ABC tv shows online.
I can only get about 2 1/4 hours before it does the same thing. And
during this, I'm not doing anything else except using a webmail client.
Any connections open will stay open. But I'm guessing that the
wonderfully protective ABC client makes many connections instead of one
connection to download everything since it will stop in the middle of a
    section.

Did the power option help? I'll try that next.

Did you see Vera's post earlier?

3 weeks have past, no update or anything else couldn't be used to solve
    this problem.
Am I the only one with this crap?

You`re not the only one, exact same problem here, still no help...

Re: Internet connection stops working every few days

Well, looks like just a few people have this problem and Microsoft
doesn't consider it a problem. Not even today there's no solving
    solution for this.
It's stressing to browse the internet, and after 500 clicks you need to
reboot in order to use the internet.
Still... what the hell is going on here? I've tried everything possible
    but still no use. :sarc:

Re: Internet connection stops working every few days

    Hello poor John,

I have a new LapTop, and got the same problem.
I do agree that Microsoft doesn't care that much of these bugs (anyway
if you only use IE7 for a reasonable lap of time i.e. 7 minutes, you are
    not anoyed ... )

What I observed was that when the crapy Windows Vista reaches 1 Gb of
memory (out of 2 Gb), then the new network connexions are hanging,
performance and ressource monitor are not able to display a single process
    running.

I think that 1 Gb is the limit for a single process to be able to run.

This post is made from my Vaio - Vista - IE7 that I do not use any more !!!
(opened 2 times in the last 3 months). Well if I take my behavior as a
    reference
Microsoft had generated a fabulous product : in France where I live you
don't have any other choice than Vista, it's not working, and you need to be
an expertt in computer science to have some programs running. I paid the
Vista OEM for nothing, great benefit for ... microsoft.

I first thought that it was my Vaio that was in cause as it has specific
    hardware,
but I got the same result with a HP computer. Just try to open up to 20
Internet explorer with performance monitor running, and after a while you
will get network stopped, no more processes present in monitor, same result
    as yours after a while.

Re: Internet connection stops working every few days

it seems i was not the only one with this problem, however i've managed
to find a hopefully working hotfix for the problem in the following
link: 'After you configure Internet Connection Sharing in Windows Vista,
the network connection stops working after one-to-two hours'
    (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937168). I've already requested the
hotfix, so i'll edit this once I get it and tell y'all folks here, if it
    works. ayight.
