    Can I uninstall WMP11 completely ?

    Hi,
I'd like to completely uninstall Windows Media Player 11 from my system
because I am in no need for it looking over my shoulder if I am doing
    anything DRM-illegal.
    - I am NOT doing anything illegal and I will never do - so no need for MS to
    watch me.
    - It is anyhow not up to MS to do this watching-job - they should stick to
their own job = making "good" software.

I'd like to replace WMP11 for once and for all by a decent media player like
    VLC :
    - lightweight
    - does read everything that one throw at it
    - does not spy on its' users

    Hi MS-Adict,

There is no way to completely uninstall WMP 11. When you install
Vista, just do not set it up and ignore it. If you already have, then
just change the default associations from WMP 11 to your media player.
    Here's a link on how:

    Hope this helps,
    Shawn

WMP11 is a Windows Vista system component and cannot
be uninstalled. If you wish not to use WMP, then simply
    don't use it.

In Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Program Access and Computer
Defaults, choose Custom and expand it. Uncheck "Enable access to this
    program" for Windows Media Player.

    Too funny considering your nick.

No you can't remove WMP 11, just re associate file types if you want
some other player to start up files that Media Player normally would
    play.

this sounds good, but I've done everything I could (see below) and
wmplayer.exe still uses from 5-10% of my cpu. what is it doing and why? I
use other players and do not want wmplayer running in the background doing
anything. I will try for 2 more weeks then give up and switch to linux. It
can't be any more painful than this.

    TEK!
(disabled all windows media player and center services, disabled access to
wmp in program defaults, changed EVERY filetype associated with wmp to a
different player manually, changed watchfolders to only c:\temp including
burn folder, probably even more I can't think of)

    Re: Can I uninstall WMP11 completely ?

Found it! It's the Dell Advanced Bi-directional Remote Control for Media
Player (WMPControllerService Service and WMPControllerService.exe process)
that keeps bringing wmplayer back from the dead. I'll report this to Dell to
try to get it fixed so we can use the remote without having wmplayer running
    as well.
