So error code 80073712 not yet fixed ?

Been using Vista ultimate since launch and no problems till recently. Of
late not able to update. Error code 80073712 appears. On seeing the various
forums it seems the problem is there for the past 3 months. What is MS doing
? Is it tough to find a solution for this ?

No sir, I have tried it out but to no avail. I would like to report a
strange occurence which is happening during booting of the OS. after this
problem has occured, every day when i boot the pc just before the log in
password screen occurs, it says please wait and it says configuring updates
and after a long time the pass word screen appears. Whether this has any
significance i do not know ?

    Hi,

Make sure it is an elevated command prompt by right clicking the CMD entry
in the start menu and using 'run as administrator'.

    Vista Update Error 80073712

After researching google and other technical forums, I've found out that with the exception of rare few that the solution posted on Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931712) simply does not work.

I feel like I've purchased a lemon. Are there lemon laws in regards to software purchases. :(

I am having the same problem with Vista premium. I was in contact with a "support engineer" who ultimately did not help me. She said it's a system issue and then tried to pass me off to someone else. If anyone has tried renaming pending.xml just to let you know, this did not fix the problem. I'm frustrated that they have actually appointed a code for this issue, but the microsoft website has no matches for it, unless it's in a forum of ppl like me trying to guess how to fix it.

    No Fix

Well, after trying so many recommended fixes with no success, I just broke down and re installed Windows Vista. I couldn't even manually download updates from Microsoft. Every time I tried, it came back with a "this update does not aply to your system". I double checked to make sure the updates were for the system I'm using, and they were. Well, that's what I've been doing all morning. Now my auto update works like it should. (Fingers crossed for next time....)

I had the same problem with the Error 80073712 on trying to update
windows, then the same error on trying to install Windows Update Agent.

Then I found a solution to this problem. I manually downloaded (from
Microsoft), the "System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista" and
    installed it.
Then I was able to install "Windows Update Agent". Once that was
installed, I could access the Windows Update Feature in the StartMenu
    without the Error 80073712.

Hope this helps other people with the same issue.

    Kind Regards,
    Marco
