I'm seeing the same issues when trying to apply KB933566 and KB929123.
Whether I use Windows Update or download the stand alone packages, both
installs get to what looks like 100% but then I get the "Windows Modules
Installer stopped working and was closed" error. For a brief period in
my messing around with this, Windows Update said that it had an update
for itself (i.e. an update to Windows Update) that it needed to apply
before it could continue but in complete ironic fashion, the update to
Window Update failed with the same error.

I'm on the verge of doing a full system rebuild at this point because
even the problem has gotten to the point that Windows Update fails to
even check for new updates anymore.

Any thoughts, anyone?

I'm also seeing this problem with Vista 64-bit. I've rebuilt the
update database by turning off the update scheduler, deleting the
files in \Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore directory, and
restarting the scheduler. This rebuilds the database but still no joy.
I have some that complete to 75% and others to 99.9% but then hang
indefinitely. With 5 updates, none will complete. The error indicating
that the Winsdows Modules Installer has stopped working *always* pops
up, so I think the Installer is the problem. Please advise if you
learn more, thanks.
