| Calculating time remaining
Is there a definitive answer to this problem? Like many people, my system (vista home premium) takes a century to copy large files. First, the File Copy dialog just sits there with title "Calculating time remaining". Then, it gets going and copies the file in about 10-20 times what it had taken XP. I've tried copying files from command line using xcopy and robocopy, with same sad results, which leads me to believe that the problem is in the API. I've read a half dozen forum threads, all with questions, none with answers. Does anyone know anything regarding this issue? |

MS know about this and is working on a proper fix. Why it is taking so unbelievably long I've no idea. Meanwhile, there is a hotfix somewhere on the MS site, but as always it isn't as fully tested as a service pack so there is a risk in using it. Can anyone provide a URL for the hotfix? Steve |

So I suspect the problem runs deeper than just the symptomatic display of a 'Calculating time remaining' dialog. Hence I'd be extremely cynical of any hotfix that didn't simultaneously resolve the cpu usage problem with the other processes at the same time (other than its being an excuse to make money out of a few more support calls) -- Jon |

This is one of those issues the fanboys club loves to pretend is "fixed" but it isn't really. A couple months back I wrote a detailed post on how it can be resolved for some people. In typical fashion Microsoft has been dragging their feet on this and pretends it only effects a handful of people or that it is limited to network situations. Not so. You can bypass the usual Microsoft BS and get the hotfix directly from the first link below. The reference is KB931770. http://thehotfixshare.net/download/i...Neutral/Vista/ http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=931770 The REAL reason which of course Microsoft denies seems to be due to how they have bowed down to Hollywood to incorporate DMR which under some conditions has severely impacted file actions in Vista. There are many lengthily articles on this scattered across the web. One of the longest is from Microsoft's own TechNet. To say that people are pissed-off about this is a gross understatement. http://forums.microsoft.com/TechNet/...8057&SiteID=17 Microsoft FIX this damn problem now! |

Thanks for the link. I installed the "hotfix" & the problem seems to be gone, but I haven't had enough time to test it thoroughly yet. -- Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most! I installed it too, worked for awhile, now the same problem comes and goes. Very strange bug that Microsoft is keeping quite about. Curious. Many have said if they use a different shell they have no problem moving files around and speeds are equal to or faster then under XP. I don't have problems either using BounceBack which is my backup software. It literally can take tens of gigabytes at a single gulp and copy them in a few minutes. So it seems just another Microsoft foul up they aren't admitting to. |
