AVG 8.0 has had a lot of issues like this. If you wish to keep it (not my
recommendation), post in the AVG support forum.

    AVG Free Support Forum
    AVG Pro (paid-for)

Recommended antivirus programs: NOD32 (commercial) or Avast (free).

In addition to the above suggestions, it couldn't hurt to make sure your
    computer is malware-free

if you leave it does security center keep saying it's not running or
does it take a while for security center to acknowledge that it's
    running?

The problem is communication between the Security Center and AVG. It's not
that uncommon for the Security Center to get out of sync with the installed
antivirus. Did you have a different AV installed before AVG? It may be
that it didn't uninstall completely. If that's the case you could try
running a "removal tool" for the previous product. Meanwhile, since you're
confident that AVG is working properly you could disable the Security Center
    notification.

ZoneAlarm did that to me. I uninstalled it when they released their
commercial version and removed many of the features from the free version.

I had problems with IE for years, for example downloads would usually fail
if the files were large. Finally I discovered a DLL from ZoneAlarm in my
system and I deleted it. My IE problems went away.

RE: Windows Security Center reports AVG is turned off ???

Following advice in I switched off the UAC through
User Accounts in control panel and rebooted. Vista makes a hell of fuss about
doing this but persevere. Switch it back on and reboot again and the problem
disappears - something to do with the level at which AVG is running.

There can be deeper problems caused by registry corruption. Fixing these is
    explained in the avg forum.

Reading a number of reviews, PC Pro for example I am not inclined to change
my free anti-virus product. If the mooted free Vista upgrades to W7 become
available on my Dell I'll certainly take that root.
