    Vista unzip utility

I am getting very frustrated with Vista!!! I have wasted so much time on
resolving problems that should never have needed my attention. I have
documented each one and what a list I have. My latest waste of time is trying
to resolve problems with Vista's unzip utility. I downloading Adobe Tutorial
zipped files to a folder on my PC that is running Vista Home Premium
    (http://www.adobe.com/designcenter/tu...t_cibexceprts). When I try to
unzip the files I get messages that say "There is already a file folder with
the name of this file. Please rename the file." Well first of all, why does
it care if one is a folder and the other a file? Secondly, you can't change
the file name until it is unzipped and it won't unzip it. I am also getting
the "You do not have authority to save this file" when I am logged in as the
administrator of the PC. What makes me more frustrated with Vista is that
when I download the exact same file on any of my five other PC's, that are
running XP Home, the unzip processes without any problems what so ever. If
someone can help me I would really appreciate it.

I haven't had any problems with the unzip utility in Vista. Have you
tried to unblock the zip before unzipping it? Right click the file and
at the bottom of the General tab you'll see an 'Unblock' button. You can
give that a go but apart from that you could check permissions/ownership
on the directories you're using. I'm an Admin but have been locked out
    of directories I created!!

    Re: Vista unzip utility

how are you trying to unzip it.
right click and drag to the same folder the zip resides in.
right click drag to a new folder.
have had no problems doing either.

lots of people have all kinds of problems with adobe stuff in vista.
it maybe just the standard compatibility with vista problem.

    Re: Vista unzip utility

Thanks for the ideas Neil & Mikeyhsd. I tried the unblock and it did nothing.
As far as permissions/ownership, I am just unzipping into a temp file that I
have been using since I set up the PC. I am constantly downloading and
copying to and from this file folder. The right click and drag functions the
same as selecting the "Extract all Files" icon. Since the unzip processes on
all of my Windows XP machines this is just another case where Vista strikes
again. Rather than wasting anymore time experimenting I am going to call
Adobe to see if anyone else has reported this problem.

    Re: Vista unzip utility

Instead of trying to get MS's lame zip utility, why don't you go with a
    real archive utility.

    There's WinZip (winzip.com not free), 7Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/
free), and WinRAR (rarsoft.com not free, but doesn't really 'expire').

    Re: Vista unzip utility

Just curious, what would be the stark difference between the other zip
programs and Vista's own zip utility? Ignoring the other compression types,
let's just talk about .zip itself. Thanks!

    Re: Vista unzip utility

DanS, Thanks for the thoughts. I like the "MS's lame" you used. The more I
use Vista the more I am thinking along those same lines. However, I am
farmiliar with the utilities you suggested and if there is not even an MS
tech that can step up and answer these questions then I will have to start
looking outside MS for my computing needs, if you get my drift.
