how to reach boot menu in vista using f8?

i can't reach the 'safe mode' option in the boot menu. when i press f8 right
after start up i reach a menu looking like this:

Select a Boot First Device

> Hard Disk

> CDROM

NVIDIA Boot Agent

sorry if this is a stupid question but i have been struggling to understand
what to do

Try this: Select Hard Disk, and then begin pressing F8. (And check the
documentation that came with your computer--some computers might have you
press F5 or some other key to access the safe mode options).

What problem do you have that requires safe mode to fix?

Read the options - "Boot Menu" is the first item - select it to get the Safe
Mode option.

it was enough to press f8 again after choosing the hard disk.
i had to fix the 0x80240029 error code in windows defender which seems to be
a common problem.
