Re: direct play for microsoft games [freelancer]

Windows Vista does include DirectPlay, but not DirectPlay Voice or Direct3D
Retained Mode. Can you perhaps be more specific about the error or behavior
you are seeing trying to run it? What kind of hardware and video do you
have? What video driver are you using?

Re: direct play for microsoft games [freelancer]

hello
i am playing fl on vista and on line
the problme hase to do with vires protections!!!!!!
i have dune exparments. i have un instaled my nortan antivres.
fired up freelancer conect to servers no problme.
reinstaled nortan same erro as you get server hase gone off line.
now if you have vista 64 bit build then there is not much use of vires
protection yet cause no one hase realy made any vires that work on a 64 bit
machine so far.
but do exparemnts and try . un install your vires protection and i bet you
will be able to get on servers. i dont know y this is. but from what im
finding out is it hase to do with something they added in windows to work
with the antivres soft were.
so if ya want to play fl on line then ya have to dump your antivres

Has anyone found a work around for this particular issue yet? Removing
anti virus and anti spam is NOT a correct fix. Is this just a lost
cause?

Freelancer works fine on my Vista box, never had a problem with it. What problem are you having? You responded to a message, but didn't include the original so I don't know what problem you are addressing.

To get online with Freelancer you must use the "white list" of
antiviruses to enable you to do so. AVG or Avast for example will enable
you to get online. Remember to run as administrator and xp compatible.
Also if your playing FL with Vista disable 3d sound in the game
options. This will solve all sorts of problems running the game.
Just found this thread so dont shout at me for the late post :)

I play Freelancer on windows Vista64 home premium and ultimate - two
machine - the laptop has a new dedicated graphic card - the other has a
EN9800GT a directX 9 card with DX10 compatability.

Virus Software to use is Eset Nod32 or AVG Personal(FREE EDITION)not the
buyable version.

You must also use the windows Firewall - but there is a free front end
for called VistaFirewallControl.

The issue is caused by the lack of DirectX Play in DX10 because MS went
over to different protocols and forgot about backward compatability.

Have fun.

Actually a Geforce 9 series card will also run Dx1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8
games as well.

Or just go naked, I can't remember the last time I installed anti-virus.

Actually MS didn't install DirectX 9 into Vista, you can download
dxwebsetup.exe and install it manually.

MS Guidelines state that ALL games that use DirectX need to install the
files via the DXSetup app, even if the DirectX files are already
detected because some may be missing. Unfortunatly not many games do
this. Including this one.... which I worked on... hey I even worked on
the installer, sue me.

It's not DirectX 10's fault, so lay off.

Actually if you want to get techie I suggest your read this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectX - it details that The DirectPlay
DPLAY.DLL was also removed and was replaced with dplayx.dll - apparently
it can be replicated by installing Dplay.DLL and renaming it.

Therefore it was MS fault - NOT DX10.

I actually like DX10 and it nice to see individual bristle on the chin
of my characters in MassEffect.

What?

You can actually do those kinds of pixel shading and bump mapping in
Dx9, most game companies choose not too because it is kindda tricky, or
just lazy. Dx10, nice, but the whole "Dx10 only in Vista", what a load.

There are some nice things you can do in Dx10 with the stuff built it,
but most of it can be coded to work in Dx9 without too much difficulty.
At least that's the claims I get from a couple guys I know. haha.

Your quite right - most of what you can do in DX9 can be replicated in
DX10 - reference to the shading aspect. One of the issues that is of
concern is the network communication protocols - which microsoft changed
in DX10.

This means that freelancer will load and launch properly but when you
try and lock on to a server - you will not be able to communicate with
it. Therefore you will not be able to play on the server.

There are work-rounds to circumvent this problem though.
