"Right Click, Send to Mail Recipient" does not open e-mail window

I am unable to attach a photo to e-mail (or any other attachment) in Windows
Explorer in Vista.

For example, with a photo, I right-click, select "Send to....Email
Recipient", select size, slect "Attach", and then nothing happens. A mail
window does not open.

This is also the case when trying to attach ANY file using the right-click
context menu method. Other attach methods work (i.e. "drag-and-drop"), but
this is major issue with photos, since I have very large photo files that
need to be re-sized by Windows before being attrached to Outlook mail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: "Right Click, Send to Mail Recipient" does not open e-mail window

Click Start, select Default Programs
Click Set program access and computer defaults
Click Custom, and select your mail client (for example, Windows Mail)
Click OK

Re: "Right Click, Send to Mail Recipient" does not open e-mail win

Thanks very much for the response. I neglected to mention that I had already
set my E-mail client (Outlook 2007) as my default mail client using "Default
Programs" as you outline below. This has not solved the problem.

I suspect this is an issue with Outlook 2007/Office 2007 and Vista not
working together correctly, perhaps something in the Microsoft code that,
even though Outlook is set as default e-mail client, Windows Vista thinks it
should be working with Windows Mail.

Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas?

You should also check the default programs in Internet Options, Set Default
to make sure Outlook has all its defaults. You also have to have set up all
your mail accts properly in Outlook.

I am surprised that you even have Outlook as an option. When I got my
computer (with Vista Home Premium) and tried to install Outlook from MS
Office 2002 XP Pro, Vista says that I could not install it because it
doesn't support Outlook any longer and that it has been replaced by Windows
mail

Yes, that's possible.

Can you send me the registry export of these two keys?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail

Try this as well. This is different from what I posted earlier.

Click "Set your default programs"
Select Microsoft Outlook
Click "Set this program as default"
Click OK.

If that does not help, could you send me the registry export of these two keys?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Clients\Mail

This procedure worked, thank you so much! (I am reasonable sure I had done
that before, but when doing it this time, it has solved the probelem.)

Articled it also.

Nothing happens when you use the Send To - Mail Recipient option in a Windows Vista computer

I am sad to report that this might not be the fix after all, or at least not
a permanent one. I am back to having the same problem as before.

I have gone back to Default Programs, set Outlook as my default mail program
once again, but this time I still do not get an e-mail to open.

This is maddening. Any other ideas?

PS - Is Windows "stealing" my settings and resetting Windows Mail as a
default? There is a default setting for Windows Mail that cannot be
un-checked, for files with an extension .eml.

I had the same problem and worked on it for a few hours today (not a
computer expert) and found a solution. If you have windows Vista and
want to Right Click, Send to Mail Recipient and have open with Outlook
2007 but can only get windows mail to open or while adjusting settings
and testing, keeps defaulting back to windows mail, or no response at
all , try the following things. (in no particular order)

1. Start: Default programs: Set program access and computer defaults:
Custom: under choose default email program click the radio button that
says use current email program then also make sure the windows mail
radio button is empty and the box next to it enable access to this
program is unchecked ((you will no longer see windows mail in your start
menu and some other places) (note: this final step may not be necessary
if you still want access to this program maybe ok to keep it checked))

2. Start: Default programs: Set default programs: (if completed the
above step you might not see windows mail listed anymore). Click
Microsoft office outlook. Click set this program as default, after you
should see the message directly above "this program has all its
defaults.

3. Start: Default programs: associate a file type or default with a
program. click current default to alphabetize the default programs list:
scroll down look for windows mail, if the .eml file type is still set to
windows mail change it to outlook 2007 by clicking change program:
browse search and select outlook.exe

4. After did all of the above was still not working for me after many
attempts, so I then went online with internet explorer, from any website
click on any send to: email address to send mail, now an outlook 2007
message window should open. Close it. Now in windows try right click
your file or image: send to : mail recipient. It should now be working
properly and finally open an outlook 2007 message window with your
selected file/s attached.

I don’t know why this final step #4 fixed the problem when all else
failed. I assume that somehow opening outlook 2007 from internet
explorer in this way created a missing file or setting that enabled
windows vista Right click : send to: mail recipient function to work
properly. I don’t know if this had anything to do with it but I changed
my windows User name a few weeks ago when the system was new after
installing outlook 2007 and afterwards I was still seeing remnants of my
old user name in some systems files or settings so I changed it back to
the original user name also (before step #1-4) so changing my user name
likely did not have anything to do with the fix/solution above and not
needed to fix but might have been the reason for the failure. I’m
curious if anyone else that is experiencing this problem also changed
there user name before experiencing this trouble. I never used the right
click send to mail recipient function before changing my user name so
not sure if this was the cause.

revised step #4: opening a send to: email window from internet explorer
online with outlook 2007 and keeping it open will allow you to
successfully “right click send to mail recipient” in outlook 2007 as
long as the email window you opened with internet explorer remains open
but shortly after closing that same email window outlook 2007 (which was
running in the background(if was not previously open) will shut down and
the right click send to email recipient function will stop working. If
you already had outlook open or open it while the internet explore
opened email is open the right click function will continue to work with
outlook until you close outlook even if you close the internet explorer
opened email. If you close the emails and outlook and you later reopen
outlook the “right click send to mail recipient” function will not work
unless you open email window from within internet explorer again fix
mentioned above. For example go to any websites contact us page and
click the email or link to send email, once the outlook email window
opens if you already have outlook open or open it then you can close
that email without sending it and now your windows vista right click:
send to: mail recipient: will work with outlook 2007 until you close it.
This is obviously not a permanent solution. If anyone has the permanent
solution (aside from reinstall outlook 2007 or windows) please post it.

I had the same problem of the subject but with Windows Mail. I followed
indications given by Ramesh and it´s working now. Thanks.
Now I would like to switch to Outlook Express which I have in my desktop
and works excellent. I ´m terribly upset with this Windows Mail, just keeps
29 addresses for automatic completion
rbender´s posted solution will take me more time, but would be Ok? if I
change settings and use OutlookExpress in the future with Windows Basic
Vista?

You cannot install Outlook Express on Vista.
You can install Outlook.

When I Right Click, Send to Mail Recipient does not open e-mail. I have
checked all the defaults are set and followed advice given but it is still
not working. It seems to have something to do with Internet Explorer, IE is
defaulted to "my current email program" but the "Send To" does not list my
email program as an option. "Send To" is working when browsing with
Mozilla/Firefox.

What else can I check?

I have the same problem, but with Outlook 2007 and Windows XP
I am unable to attach any attachment in Windows
Explorer in Windows XP and Outlook 2007.

For example, click on the file, I right-click, select "Send to....Email
Recipient", and then nothing happens. A mail
window does not open.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
