Vista Media Player - MP3/WMV/WMA faults. Cannot uninstall or roll back

Over the past few days Media Player in Vista (Home Premium Edition) has
started playing WM Video, Audio & AVI files very slowly with no sound.It
exhibits the same behaviour with MP3 music files. Media Centre is also
failing to play these files.

However, bizarrely, it still works for streaming video and MPEG video files.

I have tried uninstalling Media Player via Control Panel but, after
selecting the uninstall option and the applet dialogue displaying under user
account control, nothing else happens.

So, following advise from MVPs on this and other forums, I attempted a
rollback to before the problem was happening.

However, rollbacks are failing to complete with error messages......

Finally I used the advise in KB regarding another fault with a corrupt Vista
Media Player install using commands:

regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

But I only get error code 0x80004005 as the DLL Register Server fails to
respond.

A full Virus Scan has revealed nothing. Media Player is as good as useless.

Note that I can run these files properly in Real player, but get 'Bad Image'
Exception errors (Exception processing Message 0xc000007b) first with WMV
files before they play.

I suspect some damage could have been done by Registry Mechanic Registry
Cleaner at some stage, or perhaps corrupt CODECs? (in which case why do the
other players work?)

It eats up my resources when I play these file types, but doesn't run when I
try to play the file types which do work correctly.

a problem in the last few days, and what can I do to resolve it?

And why the heck do you need to have this DRM program running to play an MP3
file???

Problem solved after finding a post on a different group.

Basically it's the defective Creative Soundblaster driver that we're having
to put up with at the moment. Turn off the 'enhanced' tick box in the
properties and all WMP11 playback problems solved...... except we still
haven't got 5.1 surround sound because of Creative. :-(

I have the same problem,

talking about. The Creative settings or the WMP11 settings, either way I
can't find the tick box. Could you be more specific.

He means to right-click on the Speaker icon in the system tray, select
Playback Devices, right-click Speakers in that new dialog, go to Properties,
then go to Enhancements - choose "Disable All Enhancements". =\

Well, I don't get any sound at all still.
I have the latest driver for my onboard soundcard Realtek AC'97 audio
installed.
I did the disable enhancements thing, but still no sound, when trying to
play mp3 or any other mediaplayer files.

Right, that would sound like a different issue than the previous user's.

Are other sounds working in other applications/the system?
