    RE: HP Scanjet 3400c

Further update - I connected the scanner to a different USB port and its back
in action again. Looks like my method worked after all!

    HP Scanjet 3400c under Vista

OK, I managed to get the HP Scanjet 3400c scanner working under Vista. This despite the fact that HP says it won't work. It does work. Here's how.

    1. Download the XP drivers from the HP website.

    2. You have to be running as administrator. (Check this under Start / Settings / User Accounts - you can see if you are administrator from there. If not, change your account type to administrator.)

    3. You have to turn off UAC in Vista. See http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm for details about how to do this.

    4. Find the driver you downloaded from HP and unzip. Don't just run it (it's an executable zip file). Just unzip it as if it were a regular zip file first. Then find the setuo.exe executable file. Right mouse it and select properties. Select compatibility and click XP service pack 2. Store and close.

    5. Run setup.exe. The driver software will install.

    6. Connect the scanner.

    7. That's it. Works exactly the same as it used to under XP.

    Regards,

Hi there. Sorry to re-activate an old post...

I'm trying to use ScanJet 3400c on Vista but the indicated solution
doesn't work for me. Maybe it's a new incompatibility because of SP1?

I'd like to know if these users are running SP1 and the scanner works
    fine.

    Thanks :)

There were no drivers in Vista for my ScanJet 4100C scanner either, and
I assume, by the model number, mine is more recent than yours. After
reading on HP's website that they have no plans to release Vista drivers
for it, after waiting around a year, I gave up and just went out and
bought a new Kodak printer/scanner/copier. Bought the ScanJet back in
'99, and because of how old it is, couldn't see purchasing the scanner
software someone mentioned earlier. Might buy that software one day,
next day the scanner could have given up the ghost.

    Ahh found it!

I had exactly the same problem with my 3400, so I guess something has
changed post Vista SP1. However I worked around it... the above fix is
fine to an extent, but you need to add an extra step:

    1. Download the XP drivers from the HP website.

    **not needed**
    2. You have to be running as administrator. (Check this under Start /
Settings / User Accounts - you can see if you are administrator from
there. If not, change your account type to administrator.)
    **not needed**

    **definitely not needed**
    3. You have to turn off UAC in Vista. See
'Disable User Account Control in Windows Vista'
    (http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm) for details
    about how to do this.
    **definitely not needed**

    4. Find the driver you downloaded from HP and unzip. Don't just run it
(it's an executable zip file). Just unzip it as if it were a regular
zip file first. Then find the setuo.exe executable file. Right mouse it
and select properties. Select compatibility and click XP service pack
    2.
    Store and close.
**this is the step you need to change... I'm assuming you're running as
a standard user without admin rights (if not you should be... more
secure!), right click on the setup.exe file you extracted and go to
properties. At the bottom of the window, select the "show for all"
option, and then set it to run as XP SP2 compatability.**

    5. Run setup.exe. The driver software will install.

    6. Connect the scanner.

    7. Don't give any more money to those ******** at HP. honestly, to tell
a customer to buy a new scanner instead of using runas and compatbility
    mode is bloody shocking.

PS: sorry if this is a necro in some peoples eyes; I did a search for
this problem but didn't realise how old this post was before replying.

OK, it's now 1 1/2 years later and we're having the same problem.
Upgraded from a Windows ME computer to a Vista computer, and our scanner
isn't supported by HP for Vista.

We tried to follow the instructions by QJP in #22, but are having
    problems.
No problem downloading the XP driver (sj652en.exe, 30.6 mb) from HP
    website.
It doesn't look like a zipped file , though it seems to be. And there
is no option that I can find for unzipping it. Must we have specific
    software for unzipping this file?

I was able to set it for compatibility mode for XP SP2, and the box for
run setup.exe after unzipping was already clicked, but I get an error
    that says
    "Can't create output file: c:\sj652\lpupdate.exe "

    And I'm stuck. Any suggestions?
How do I unzip the XP driver?

    Thanks in advance.
