| System Restore Error
I need to do a system restore because I installed a bad app in Vista Ultimate but I get the following error. I would really appreciate some help so I can get back to a stable state Error: System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: The writer experienced a transient error. If the backup process is retried, the error may not reoccur. (0x800423F3) Thanks, Kevin |

| Re: System Restore Error
Based on another customer who worked with Dell to troubleshoot this, we think it's an imaging problem (that is, the way in which Dell copies the Vista image to the new computer). The customer was advised by Dell to reinstall Vista, which fixed the problem. Unfortunately I don't have any other workaround for you. My advice is to contact your computer's manufacturer for assistance. If it's Dell, they should be able to look up past cases on this. -- This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. | System Restore Error
I just finished setting up a new Dell laptop and tried to run "System Restore" to create a restore point, but got the below error and "System Restore" doesn't open. Is there any way to repair "System Restore"? ERROR: System Restore There was an unexpected error: The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect (0x8007007B) System Restore will now close. |

It shouldn't be necessary in the first place. Cheers. |

You are a branded scoundrel!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Criminal!! Instead of helping a person, you scum are dripping your sh*t around. It is none of your business, crook, to even ask such a question: "Why does an advanced OS?" If you do not understand simple things ask a surgeon to do a lobotomy on you. Or perhaps you've already had one. |

My hunch is that you perhaps did something to the volume where the backup is located. Is it possible that you disconnected the device and reconnected it at a later date and it got a different letter? |

| Re: System Restore Error
This error is caused by faulty imaging by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) that results in the presence of an invalid volume. To see if this is the problem, go to System in Control Panel and open System Protection. There will be two volumes shown, one of which is selected and named “Missing.” Selecting C:\ and deselecting “Missing” solves the problem. -Michael |

| Re: System Restore Error Have same problem in System Restore with transient error. Can not get rid of it. Tried sfc/scannow with no result. Tried to restart system restore but same error. Understand that it may be due to volume shadow copy being set to manual and needs to be restarted - set to automatic and then started - but no clue how? Any ideas? Looks like I might have to re-install. -- The Postman |

| Re: System Restore Error
I am running Vista Ultimate x86 and the default setting for the Volume Shadow Copy service is Manual, Started. I don't have any problems with the default setting. However, if you wish to change it click on the Start orb and type Services. Click on Services at the top of the list, click on Allow when you get the UAC prompt and you will be in Services. Scroll down to Volume Shadow Copy, right click on it and select Properties. In the Volume Shadow Copy Properties window, "Startup type" dropdown list you can select Automatic (Delayed Start). This will start the service after your computer has finished booting. If you select Automatic it will start during the boot process, which is unnecessary and can cause an additional delay in your startup time. Once you have chosen Automatic (Delayed Start) you need to click on Apply. If the service shows that it is stopped you then need to click on the Start button, under "Service status" and then click on Apply. Once you have done this you can click on OK and you are done. Close the Services window. C.B. -- It is the responsibility and duty of everyone to help the underprivileged and unfortunate among us. |

| Re: System Restore Error ACTION Found service was set to manual but stopped. Did not immediately use automatic option. Started manual service and clicked ok. Tested system restore by creating a restore point without restart... Did not work - still got transient error. Tried Automatic [delayed start] with same procedure. No luck. Then tried automatic [delayed start] option without restart. Did not work. Service was marked off. Restarted and tried to create system restore point with delayed settings; but nothing. Then restarted system again with full automatic setting. Services report vss stopped on reboot. Reverted to manual setting and started vss again but no luck. Finally went to MS Update and downloaded Silverlight. System Restore reported that new Silverlight update had created a successful restore point? Despite this system restore will still not manually create a restore point and 0x800423F3 transient error repeats itself on manual setting will not go back. Lost. Any ideas?
