I am having the exact same problem but related to ffdshow.av. As soon
as I go into the videos folder of MCE on Vista Ultimate, it seems like
it is attempting to render the thumbnails and it crashes ehshell.exe.
This throws up a debugging dialouge box reporting that "An unhandled
    win32 exception occured in ehshell.exe [4924]".

I have had similar issues ever since I installed a divx decoder on to
my machine.. Could it be that there is some incompatibility between
ALL divx decoders and MCE? I have seen this issue reported in relation
to the "DivX" branded decoder, Nero and ffdshow.

    I'm having a similar issue:

In "Videos", all I see is "Local Disc (C:)" and its actually "c:\windows\ehome" that shows up when I select it.

Fresh install of Vista, no Nero, Haali Media splitter and FFDSHOW installed. Anybody seen this?

I tried removing the "Public" folders, but "Public Videos" still showed, until I emptied it.

    Any help would be appreciated!

Do you have Nero on your system? Is there an update available for your
    version of Nero?

There's some bugs in various DIVX versions from any of three plus companies
that make decoders for it. The latest version of each is *less* likely to
have problems. Divx 6.2 should be considered unstable, but they're at 6.6
now anyways. XVid is still under development. FFDShow would likely be
problematic, FFDShow Tryouts should work better but is still under
    development.

Re: Vista Media Center Crashes on movie load

I have a Vista 32 Media Center, and it had developed a problem (after removing a codec) where accessing "My Videos" would cause a crash. I set Windows Media Center as the default player for .avi (they are all divx) and the problem went away. Before that I had tried many different codecs, system restores, updates, etc. A simple fix for a frustrating problem. I hope this helps someone else.
