    Where did my DVD playback sound go in Windows Media Player 11?

    I have no idea what happened between yesterday and today because all of a
    sudden Windows Media Player will play my DVD's but there is no sound. It will
    play CD's just fine, sound and all. I opened the same DVD in Nero Showtime
    and it plays fine. I don't get it.

    Anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance...

    In WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information dialog, what DVD/MPEG
    decoders does it say you have installed?

    Does this look like what your asking for? If not I'll check back after work.
    Thank you for your reply. I've seen many different people having the same
    problem. My computer is custom made so no dealer is involved. I'll list my
    parts if necessary. Thanks and have a great day.

    OK - so you have both the Nero and Microsoft DVD decoders on your system
    right now... if you temporarily disable the Nero DVD Audio decoder, does
    audio work again... ?

    Point of reference, what is the NAME and location of the Microsoft
    codecs for MPEG-2?

    I hope I don't sound amateur here but how do I disable it? I traced it to the
    folder it's in, right clicked on it and opened the Properties dialog box but
    I don't see how to disable it. Do you have a suggestion?

    WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information covers that.

    Well, according to that, these files are controlling DVD playback on your
    system:
    ===
    video Nero DVD Decoder nevideo.ax 4.6.15.0
    video Nero Video Decoder nevideo.ax 4.6.15.0
    video Microsoft MPEG-2 Video Decoder msmpeg2vdec.dll 11.0.5840.6324
    video Nero Video Decoder HD nevideohd.ax 4.6.15.0
    video CBVA DMO wrapper filter cbva.dll 6.0.6000.16386
    audio Nero Audio Decoder 2 neaudio2.ax 4.6.15.0
    audio Microsoft MPEG-1/DD Audio Decoder msmpeg2adec.dll 11.0.5840.6324
    ====
    The MSMPEG ones are the ones that I think should work here. The Nero
    ones -- can you update to the current build of Nero? The current Nero is at
    least 4.9.4.1 , and supposedly has Vista compatibility fixes.

    So I would start there if I were you. =)

    I have the exact same issue. To watch a DVD I need to use Nero. If I use WMP
    I get no sound. Is there an issue with the installation of Nero? Is Vista
    missing some settings for sound in WMP?

    I had this exact same problem, after two sessions with MS support online, we found that in the sound control panel in the properties of the playback device on the supported formats tab, the encoded formats had an incompatible format selected. We changed the format, and everything works fine.
