ATI Driver Problems

The ATI drivers that came with Vista crashed my laptop when it went to
sleep/hibernate. Here is some very important information that I found

737-26900: Radeon™ products - Catalyst 7.3 for Vista Causes BSOD Error
Referencing Win32k.sys in Some Systems



The information in this article applies to the following configuration(s):
Catalyst Display Driver 7.3
Windows Vista 32-bit Edition
Windows Vista 64-bit Edition
Symptoms:
After installing Catalyst 7.3 drivers and rebooting the computer, in rare
cases, some users may experience a blue screen (BSOD) error referencing
Win32k.sys.

Cause:
The cause of this issue is not yet known.
Workaround:
To work around this issue, you can disable the ATI External Event Utility
service or revert back to using Catalyst 7.2.

To revert back to Catalyst 7.2:

Start the system in safe mode by pressing F8 before the Windows loading
screens.
Once at the desktop, click on the Windows logo button
(start)>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Use the "Recommended Restore" option, which should restore the system to
before you installed the updated drivers.

To disable the ATI External Event Utility, please use the following steps:

Boot to Safe Mode by pressing F8 before the Windows loading screen
When loaded to the desktop, click on the Windows logo button (start)>Control
Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Right click on the ATI External Event Utility and select properties
Use the drop down menu to set the startup type to disabled, click OK
Restart the system

ATI Engineering has been advised of this issue and is investigating. Any
updates will be published when they become available.

the 7.3 drivers are very new and have just recently been released. they were not the ones in vista release.
I just installed the 7.3 drivers and have no problems.
I use MSCONFIG and disable all Startup items.
reboot.
install 7.3
reboot.
check that it works ok.
use MSCONFIG to enable all STARTUP items.
reboot.
ALL IS WELL.

it is not unusual to have problems when you install drivers with a virus program running.

They made my iTunes videos stutter and poor Christina is mouthing Candyman way after the tune has sung it!!!

Yeah I just installed the 7.3 drivers on the x1300 no issues either.

For the most part it seems to affect Intel chipsets with RAID.

Actually it's effecting many systems with many different configurations.

ATi is looking into it, but for the time being the work around does seem to
work, or simply rolling back to the 7.2 drivers works.

I'm having the same problem, it goes into endless blue screen/reboots, no
RAID on my system, nor is the chipset RAID capable.

AMD based systems are affected as well, there seems to be no rhyme or reason
to what systems are, or are not, effected.

Why should I check the forums on Rage3D?

Not that I don't mind Rage3D, I'm one of the oldest members LOL.

I'm actually the user who first reported the issue.

The grand majority of systems where the issue is showing up are Intel
965/975 chipsets.

Those chipsets are RAID capable.


Hence why I said "for the most part"

I realize there are other systems having issues as well, however I was just
stating that it seems to be the most common on those systems.

it makes a big difference on how the drivers are installed/updated.
doing it with a full running system is more likely to cause problems.
that's why I always use msconfig and stop everything before installing drivers.

mine is amd based with mobo that supports raid, not using it. NOTHING intel intentionally.

I've got an ASUS mobo with no Intel in it (that i can tell) and was happily
using the Vista supplied drivers until Steam complained that the drivers
weren't up to date. I updated to 7.3 and now the computer can't restart from
hibernate mode (its a x1300 card).

Hopefully i can restore to yesterday and all will be good, which is a shame
as the drivers are seemingly better than before, just wont restore :(
